Flip Zenith Daytona for 116509?

I have a white dial 1996 Daytona that I’m considering selling to replace with a white gold Daytona with an Arabic numbered dial. The 16520 is clean but without papers so not quite investment grade. As iconic as the watch is it doesn’t have the “it” factor when I wear it and I find myself reaching for it out of neglect rather than desire. I love the weight of gold and the other dial options so feel the WG Daytona would be a good fit. Any thoughts on this trade?

Other pieces in my collection that I’m not selling:
AP ROC rose gold on strap
Everose Day Date 40
Couple of vintage Speedmasters
Rolex 16800 Sub (daily)
Yachtmaster 116622 Rhodium

Yup, I would make that trade.

Which Arabic dial are you considering? Have you considered any of the modern dial options like steel or blue?

Quite frankly, I'd sell the current Daytona and get a different model. It seems as if you're not thrilled with the Daytona to begin with, and I doubt that a PM Daytona will change anything. Since you wear the Sub daily, perhaps you should consider a PM Sub or a GMT.

That is an Iconic watch for sure!

Its a shame, I would part with it, (based on not being full set), but I would get the PM Daytona with full set for sure. I would almost never buy a watch without a full set.....maybe only exception would be a super nice 4 digit if it had some documentation.

If the white dial doesn’t sing to you then why not, & to not having a full set isn’t all that bad to begin with. My 16520 isn’t a full set either though it did come with service papers.

I’d do it. A Daytona in full gold is fantastic. Wears completely differently compared to SS. I think this watch was meant to be in PM.

I had a white gold Daytona. I don't know what you mean by it factor. If you mean a watch that will capture people's attention, WG won't do much over SS as people will think WG is SS. If you mean some personal feeling like the weight, then you should do it. Mine had a meteorite dial, you should get a unique dial if you can.

I'm not looking for grabbing attention, but rather something I enjoy looking at. I appreciate the unique dial options, upgraded clasp (on 2015+), and additional feeling of weight that a WG Daytona would offer (on my daily sub I actually prefer the old style clasp and lightweight feel). I'd consider a RG GMT if that was offered to me at some point...granted that would require a chunk of cash to make up the difference.

Well wait a minute here. Listen, I unloaded my Daytona (well 2 now) and feel it has plenty of short comings. But, what makes you think a Daytona, and a somewhat similar looking Daytona will scratch that itch? There is a lot of hype surrounding the Daytona and is one has the means, one almost feels like we "should" have one in the collection. I might unload the daytona, and sit for a while and see how Basel world turns out this year. Then perhaps make a move.

I had my first one in 2000, and it took me 14 years to get my hands on my SS version, and was convinced that was my grail. Turns out, while I like the look, for me the Daytona in any modern form (mid 80's to present time) would also likely end up being flipped by me.

The Zenith looks much better than the WG Arabic Daytona - IMHO.

Own a WG Daytona (116509 w/ blue dial). Think you should make the trade.

If the SS doesn’t sing to you, I would move it. That is a lot of “watch budget” tied up in something you don’t really love...

I like the red accents on the WG you’re looking at, and completely understand why you would think it’s the more interesting piece.

You have a great collection...all the best on your decision.

Hmmm...I wouldn't. TBH, you've got a couple of watches already that are going to give you plenty of "it" factor.

I've been around the bock with all manner of Daytona's, and I just don't get the bang for my buck out of the 508/509.

Now you mentioned a swap for a full gold CHNR. That would get my motor running...

It's nice to have the PM pieces. If I need some 'it" factor, the 116509 with racing dial seems cool if you are a watch nerd and recognize this Rolex combination as being a PM piece otherwise I don't think anyone will notice that watch. I would sell the Zenith Daytona and consider an AP Royal Oak open work style, more "it" factor. If it has to be a white gold Daytona, then the current blue dial 116509 might do it.

I wouldn't, but if you got no love for the Zenith and prefer the gold, do it!

That said, and I only mention this, cause you said the "I" word (investment), actually you said "investment Grade". I'm not saying this should be a factor in your decision, but I'd be willing to bet, despite your zenith having no box or paper, it will still appreciate much more than the 116509 will.

Again, not saying that should be the most important factor or even a factor at all, but just replying to your comment about it not being investment grade.

On the face of it, seems awefully tempting. But you’ve assembled such a well curated collection. Would hate to break up the unique band.

I don't buy watches as investments, however it is hard to ignore that factor with a zenith Daytona. I'm tempted to stash it away as opposed to selling it.

Another option is to hope for an allocation eventually of a BLRO / CHNR in which case I'd retire the Daytona from rotation and swap that one in.

The white Zenith Daytona is my grail Rolex so I wouldn't do it however you don not seem to enjoy it and the WG Daytona is a lovely piece so I guess it might make sense for you.

I would make the trade for sure. I think a more colorful dial and the weight/feel of PM would definitely restore the “it” factor for you.

Usually, yes. I don't really know what I'm going to wear on a daily basis so prefer to have all at the ready.
