Future Rolex owner looking for advice!!!!!
Hi, I am currently looking forward to acquiring my first Rolex, I am interested in the No-Date Submariner and Explorer 1+2. While my Rolex knowledge is not that vast I do know that these are very hard watches to find at an AD. I live in the NYC area and there are quite a few AD's around, I've visited a few and have got different responses from each, one AD told me that I should check back around February as that's when they start getting new shipments for the new year and they get maybe one or two subs. Another AD told me(quite rudely) that the stainless steel sports are only for their VIP Clientele. I am usually very busy and don't have the time to run around to all the different AD's in the NY area to check on them and I've read in person interactions are better then calling over the phone to check. So I guess my question here is which model would be more likely to find in an AD(sub or explorer)? And for those familiar with AD's in the NY area, which ones have you had a good experience with and is most likely to turn up one of those watches(I know its impossible for you to know their current stock but any responses are welcome!) **Sidenote**I really would like to purchase my first Rolex from an AD(for the memories :)) because I know there's quite a few grey market dealers in NYC.

I would have given the same advice as above poster. 114060 second hand prices don’t seem to have caught up with the January price increase.

I'm from NYC as well. I would suggest going to an AD not only for the experience but just in case you want more pieces that might not be the easiest to get. You can also avoid the exhorbant markups that is fueled by the grey market. Also you'll get the 5 year warranty so you don't have to freak out in case something is defective.

Either one of these watches are available, unworn and complete, at very small premiums, immediately on the used market. I would just buy one used and forget the whole AD thing if I were you.

I bought my first Rolex, 16570, used from a reputable online seller. I went the AD route for my second, 114060, for the experience. No regrets either way.

Thanks for all the replies! I've got some thinking to do as to which watch I would preference more but thank you all for clearing up some things.

FYI...I bought my first Rolex from a grey market dealer back in the 90s on advice from the TURF guys. It's fine. I heard very good things about DavidSW and Takyuka from some of my buddies. I've never bought from them but a few of my friends have with great success! |

I know it’s been said ad nauseum but buy what sings to YOU, doing your absolute best to clear your mind of our opinions, value retention, ubiquity, etc.
If you’re in NYC, I would think there are second hand dealers that have these pieces for you to try on (but maybe too expensive with the premium to buy). Seeing them and trying them on is worth more than a million photos and recommendations from others. FWIW, I have owned a Sub, Polar Exp II, GMT, DJ41 and eventually sold them and now own only a 39mm Explorer, because it turns out that’s the one I personally like the best due to comfort (#1 most important), and style. There are certainly no wrong choices, but usually your first instinct is the best one. Let us know what you decide and post pics! |

I would by secondhand if the premium is not large. Yeah, the situation is BS.
