Tudor Hydronaut?
Hey All,
I’m curious as to opinions on the Tudor Hydronaut (especially the II). For some reason, this models doesn’t seem to get much attention on the forums and I don’t know why...especially since both the Sub and the Pelegos/BB get so much discussion, yet the Hydronaut was the watch in-between these two. Thoughts?? Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk |

I have this one and this is the watch that I have received most requests if I want to sell.

Nicely engineered bezel sunk into the lugs. Kinda like the Yacht-Master of Tudor - Just missed the mark when Tudor had actual Submariners you could pick up for peanuts. I like them too. The tapered 15mins elapse is a nice touch.

Let me ask this: in terms of bang for your buck for used, is a Black bay around $2,500, a Hydronaut around $1800, or say an Oris 65 around $1,100 a better value?

I have a Tudor Hydronaut 25000 black with rubber strap and love it. To me, it has the integrity of a Rolex 126660 DSSD on a rubber strap for 1/5 the price. The rubber strap could be longer, but it’s a great wearing watch and catches watch enthusiast’s eyes.

At that time Tudor had become a sleepy backwater brand, ignored by Rolex and no longer even sold in many countries. I have no doubt there were some nice models but I am very pleased that Tudor has been woken up again and made into something far more desirable and higher spec. - sold again Worldwide. They are now great watches but I never used to give them a second look.

The Tudor line prior to around 1990 was 100% all Rolex except for movement,Tudor watches are made by the same Rolex brand maker. The major difference between a Tudor and a Rolex is that Rolex contracted the manufacturing of the movement out to a 3rd party manufacturer (ETA in 95% of them).Very much like Rolex did with all there chronographs before 2000 they used ETA Valoux and Zenith movements so are they a Rolex just because they have the brand name yet movement is from ETA just like the Tudor. Now the ETA ebauche movements were made to Rolex's specifications but rotors signed Tudor. This movement was then sent to Rolex where it was assembled into a watch with all Rolex remaining parts (Rolex case, bezel, strap or bracelet, dial, crystal and crown, seals, etc.). These parts were the same parts used in the Rolex line of watches. The Tudor old movements were high grade 17, 21, 25, 26,or more jewel Automatic or Manual movements which when correctly cleaned, timed, and oiled, will keep time almost as well as any normal Rolex now Tudor uses in-house made movements in most of today's line up.. The case screw backs were engraved original oyster case by Rolex,on all the older oyster type models. In the gold or TT models Tudor uses genuine solid gold Rolex bezels and crown caps, but their bracelets are normally only gold filled,to reduce the cost while Rolex uses solid gold in their bracelets. The French Navy (among others) opted for the Tudor Submariner, instead of the Rolex Sub,the French Navy demanded rigorous testing and tested several brands These watches were tested to carefully calibrated abusive tests in an attempt to destroy them to see how much abuse it could take before losing accuracy or malfunctioning .After testing they choose the Tudor and the only thing the French navy didn't order was the Oyster bracelet. They chose a nylon strap because it would be much more easy to change, and easily replaced if broken. And today the only step down in quality with Tudor watches in general is the price. The the main difference between a Rolex Sub and say a Tudor Sub is they used a top range Chronometer grade ETA a first class all in-house built movement but not Rolex made, and in watches like the Tudor Prince they used a light Oyster bracelet, on Subs they used the heavy Oyster bracelet.Although the Tudor Hydronaut range are very fine watches but IMHO case wise not quite as good as the Oyster cased ones but still a excellent all round watch. Now today the Tudor line has quite a heritage with Hans Wilsdorf the founder of Rolex.

Here's my Hydronaut II Chrono. I owned this watch for the first time 10 years ago and sold it. I managed to find another one this year that was still new in the factory wrappings. It's now a keeper...

My father gave his to me yesterday, what a awesome and under the radar watch btw!! Loved the peace especially by it’s thickness, that is a lot thinner than the BBs and Pelagos...
Another point that I like a lot, is the fact of it’s true design, that imo is beautiful and unique Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk |

Does anyone know the difference between the Hydronaut II ref. 20030 and ref. 20040? From what I can tell they're both 41mm steel references?
