A lot of hype on the new Omega 321. It’s pretty clear they are gunning for Daytona.

The Speedy looks better to my eyes and I love the bracelet. It also has a more interesting movement and certainly a nicer-looking one, not that you could see the heart of the Rolex even if it didn’t look industrial. All things being equal I would choose it over an SS Daytona.

All things are not equal though. To the untrained eye, the watch basically looks the same as one you can get for a third of the price and it’s not like you have the compensation of it being in PM (unless you spend absurd money on the platinum version). At MSRP it’d be extremely difficult to justify buying the Omega over the Rolex. Then again, the point is moot since hardly any bugger can get the Cosmograph at MSRP.

I have never bought a used watch, but this Speedy might really interest me if its value does what most non-limited Speedys eventually do.

Why is it hype?

It’s a new watch that has aspects a lot of people have wanted for a long time.

Hype is all the over retail bs that has infested the industry. Reports and discussions are not necessarily hype.

It's a beauty but too expensive, I'll stick with my garden variety Hesalite Moonwatch.

Those 321 speedys will be very hard to get and most will live a dark life in a safe.

The Daytona more user friendly as a daily with a damn good automatic movement.

The new Speedy looks great but I personally prefer the aesthetics and fit of the Daytona (if we’re talking MSRP). Not sure what grey market prices will be on the 321 but at two-thirds the price of a SS Daytona, it certainly becomes a more attractive option.

This is pretty-much me. I like the new Speedy, but I'm not such a nerd that I'm going to pay twice what (most of) the other models are selling for, just for an updated old reissued movement.

Heck, I have two Speedmasters (wearing one now) and they have different movements, neither of which I could tell you the number of, unless I take the watch off of my wrist and look at the back of it.

Now, ask me about the engine model designation, displacement, horsepower and other trivia about my car and I'll bore you for an hour.

As a modern watch with a modern movement, the Daytona is technically superior.

Both are fuelled by hype and perceived fashion and exclusivity and have a ludicrous price. Neither interest me at all. The chronograph function is just not very useful or practical.

I love the 321 Speedmaster. But for that price, I’ll add $1000 and get a TT Daytona which fits my aesthetic taste better and I can take it down diving with me and not have to leave it on the boat.

Purely based on aesthetics here, I prefer the Speedmaster to the Daytona. Seeing this side-by-side comparison really drives home the point that the Daytona dial has too many shiny, glossy surfaces -- it all starts to run together. The Speedmaster is much more legible and well laid out, IMO.

Thats a freaking lot of money for a manual wind, plastic crystal, stainless steel unlimited production omega. Omega's have a proven history of heavy discounts on the secondary markets and poor retention of value over time. Compare that to a Daytona that will be hard to acquire but will increase in value over time. I'm not an Omega hater, I have 3 that I love but I also paid substantially less than retail on all of them, one of them at 50% of new price and it was nib. My Daytona I paid a hefty grey market premium but even at that a year later it has appreciated. I'm not into the moon watch hype, I bet the astronauts would have preferred an automatic sapphire crystal for everyday wear. Its just not safe to have thousand of shards of sapphire floating around in a space capsule should they accidentally break the crystal. Save your money and get a 44.25 moonwatch with sapphire crystal, display case back and automatic winding.

321 vs. Daytona at Retail... Daytona all Day.

321 vs Daytona at Market Price... 321 and it's not even close.

I love the 321 and everything about it but I can't pay that price. I'm not that hardcore into it. I know nothing about the R&D and production costs, but I wish Omega was able to price this right around $10K. In my opinion at that price point people would be lining up to give Omega their money...

I have a speedy triple date that I love. It’s the one that sparked my interest in watches. I love it so much I haven’t gotten a speedy moon watch. I have a daytona that I love too. That being said I appreciate both lines. If I were to get another speedy it would be classic hesalite moonwatch over the 321 on personal preference alone, not even considering price.

I’m in the camp that I don’t see the Daytona/speedy and sub/Seamaster as a competition.

321 speedy all day. That movement was used in VC, AP, and PP, was to the moon and oh yeah is legible. It will also likely be made in smaller quantities than the Daytona. Now, many see the price as being too high, and yes it’s a lot of money. But let’s be objective here, price is subjective. Other than the name on the dial, what objective facts does one have to stand on to claim that the Daytona is “worth” the 13k and the speedy is not?

I have a lot of Daytonas and a few Omegas...while I love the Daytona I find it very hard to read the time on the black dial ones...whilst the Omega is so easy to read...

I'd pick one of these up second hand for fun I think.

I own both and to my 69-year-old eyes the Omega is much more legible, even in dim light, which is one of the reasons it was chosen for space work.

I love my Speedy moon watch with hesalite. It's an indispensable part of my collection. I'm not a buyer of the 321 at the full list price of $14k, though. Depending on the price you can actually get one when they're release, I might be a buyer. Get it down to $8k and I might be tempted.

Not a fan of the Daytona, even at MSRP.

I love the Speedmaster. Have a pre-moon vintage myself and it may be the last watch in my collection if I had to sell everything else. That said, there is no way I would take this new Speedmaster over a SS Ceramic Daytona. Given both were offered/available and selling for their MSRP.
