Input on older Day Date

I’ve always thought of the day date as the quintessential Rolex, the yellow gold with the bark band is imo timeless. That being said I currently have a hulk and a Batman with the oyster bracelet. I don’t really need another watch, especially a newer model day date. Which brings me to the question at hand, are there some desirable older model 1990/2000 models that would be reasonably priced and desirable among fanciers. Any insight appreciated, thanks

An 18238 is what you’re describing. Double quick set. Just make sure the bracelet has minimal stretch. I have one I love it. However I am looking to upgrade to a 118238 at some point.

I have an 1803. It's not a quick set. And it doesn't have a sapphire crystal. It does have a pan pie dial which I always liked. The Day-Date is time less and have always looked similar from model to model. If you can live without certain features the 1803 is a bargain compared to the newer models. The 1803 itself has also seen a jump in price too.

I have read on one the Rolex forums that it is possible to retrofit a sapphire crystal in lieu of the plexi. The sapphire really makes these watches pop, so that's something to consider.

Finding an 1803, or a newer model with orginal bracelets can be a challenge, as the new ones are now vintage themselves, but it's possible.

The previous poster mentioned finding one with minimal stretch. I believe the 118238 had solid links and was more durable.

It all depends on what you like, want and, how much you are willing to spend.

Get yourself a 18038 and a winder and you’ll be good to go. The 18038 is by far, in my opinion, the best deal on a day date.

That is true, but for a little more you have a double quick set which is very convenient (18238)

Find a good condition 18238 and you will be a happy man. I was lucky to find a mint version and have no regrets.

The bark finish that you mentioned is really not definitory for the DD as these are pretty rare.

The best deal with the DD imo is a 5 digit, double quick set. Find one with little wear on the bracelet and it is really all you need in a watch.
Now, my 2 cents.....a wg piece is a the icing on the cake.

Either an 18038 or 18238 with black onyx dial would be the most classy DD money can buy imo.

Its the only watch I own that I never get tired of looking at. A preowned Prez is also a LOT of bang for your buck right now. A double quick set in minty condition can be had in the 10-13K range!!!

I have always heard Rolex does not design anything for retro-fitting. The sapphire crystal is just a tad different in size from the plastic crystal.

Appreciate the insights, definitely have some information to work with now. I did find one without the bark band reference 19018 though. Price seems good and condition looks great, but I’m going to start researching some of the references mentioned.

If you are lucky enough to have a Rolex collection, a WG DD is the cherry on top. What more could u possibly want?
