Serial numbers have been random for about 10 years, so no way of telling the year from the serial number.
Which model watch is it ? |

Nobody knows what year the serial number is from. Back in the day, you could tell that if a serial number begins with a certain letter, it is from a certain year. Nowadays, SNs are random. And your random SN can have a first letter as SNs from a certain year did. If you have a 116900 it wasn't made back in 2002. And if it was purchased from an AD (AD is an authorised dealer, no such thing as reputable or not reputable AD, if Rolex trusts them to be a dealer of their watches, them being reputable is a certainty) then you really have nothing to worry about. Just out of curiosity, does your serial number happen to have 2 letters in it, as in first letter and some other latter later on in SN? It might explain how Rolex differentiates the random SN from previously non random SNs.

How many digits are there on the ID?
If there are 8 then it is a random ID.

Is your serial number a Y followed by 6 digits (Y123456)? Or is it 8 characters e.g.
7212J9S0 (0 = zero. The letter O is not used in Rolex random serial numbers). Is the serial number visible on the "inner bezel" (the “rehaut” or “flange” area) around the 6 o'clock position? The more information you provide, the more knowledge you will gain. |

Since 2010 that unique numbers beginning digit could be anything, even a y.
