$6-8k - Sub, Explorer or ?

Another “what to buy” thread I know

Looking to spend $6-8k, new or second hand. Mostly considering Explorer 1 39mm or a SubC 114060 (date is a bit too much $) Both have pros and cons.

Question is, what would you buy? $6-8k in the market on a main piece, go anywhere watch?

I feel the Explorer is somewhat more versatile for every day life and would be the better option as a “one watch” collection. It would be perfect for office duties as well as weekend duties - maybe not extreme sports though.

The Sub on the other hand obviously leans more toward the sporty side. Perfectly suitable for the office but (for me) not really correct for wearing with a suit so I think I would want a second dressier option for suit days. You may not have this issue though.

It’s a close call and they’re both icons. I do love the case shape of the Explorer more than the sub but the Explorer is a much plainer piece. It’s definitely more under the radar.

Given the option, I’d go sub if it fits your idea of day to day life. Ultimately though, as a 2 piece collection these two together would be amazing.

If you like Sub Date then pay extra and choose Sub Date. Buying the non date only because its cheaper will not make you save any money as it will go cheaper, harder to sell and wont keep its value as good as sub date.

Be careful with the factory inaccurarices of explorer 1 before buying.

Buy what you like best. For me, I like the bezel and would go with the Sub. I love my 114060.

Land or Sea?, Explorer vs Submariner? Both are amazing and you genuinely can’t go wrong. I would go Explorer at this moment in your life as it’s easier to build a future collection around - so many options for the submariner going forward (TT, green, black, PM). Plus who knows what Basel will bring...

Good luck however you choose to proceed

Please check the other threads the small crown logo bottom hole on the dial.

There are also ones with scratches hands on the net which look disgusting.

Sorry but not all models are same quality. You can not expect a Sub GMT or Daytona quality on an Explorer. High prices, long waiting lists have reasons...Realities of painful life.

Even Sub Gmt and others will have very minimal inaccuracies under magnification, but you shouldnt be able to see from a distance, if you notice then thats a big headache.

So the Rolex manufacturing process has better QC for the current hype-beast models than for the rest of the lineup? That’s.... quite the theory.

.

That is incorrect!

I had/have Sub, Explorer 2, DJ, E1... and they all had the same built quality!

This makes no sense to me. The Subs and GMTs have minor issues too. I've not seen anything to indicate the Explorer I has significantly more issues.

I do not have to. I speak out of my own experience not others.

Having said that, faults can be found on any model. Exceptions don't make the rule!

In that price range of 6-8k I'd be looking for a 14060M.

Explorer I for a great all-arounder! If it's your "only watch" the Explorer makes a lot of sense. It can fit under a tight dress shirt sleeve and is tough enough to go anywhere. I chose my Explorer I over a Sub for that very reason. I had a thought that I would pick up a Sub-No Date eventually (but that was when cases were filled with them). Now I am waiting around like everyone else.

me too, I love my 114060 and would take over the Explorer and basically every other Rolex, except perhaps the Daytona

$6-8k - Sub, Explorer or ?

I am a big fan of my explorer. It basically holds all my wrist time. It took me years to realize that the is explorer is my perfect watch. I recently picked up a 116610LN, sized it and brought it home, however, it is still sitting in the box because I keep going for my explorer.

Save a bit more money and buy a 116610. I like the date function on the Submariner.

Explorer for the win!

Really, buy what you like. As others have said its a great first Rolex, and you can build a collection around it. Not sure what the quality comments are about... its a Rolex. They make them all to their standards. I haven't seen any issues. Besides its not like they are built in some far off factory by new hire watch makers and just because its a few $K less they just slap parts together. Its an excellent watch. Both are.

Good to see this crowd is as split as I am!

I love both...probably the sub slightly more (been a fan of it longer) but the explorer is more versatile and honestly can do it all

Such a hard (first world problem) choice!

The Explorer is way more versatile. It also looks amazing on virtually any strap.

Honestly you could buy both and have a duo that would last a lifetime.

Submariner for me! Mind you both are incredible : )

The above bs about the explorer being inferior is just that bs.... in my opinion.

Cheers
