Surprised by DD40

Been in the market for a DayDate in WG over the past year or so. A DD has always been my grail piece and I am just about in the position to be able to afford it now. Had my heart set on a 36mm in WG with black stick dial but this has now been phased out in the new 2019 models and I just cant find one (I usually only buy new). Been looking at the new silver stick dial but it just do it for me.

Out for lunch today I popped into the AD close to my work and they had a fairly good selection in both sizes but mostly YG with diamonds which aren't my thing. I tried on few pieces including a DD40 in YG with black dial, 36mm with diamond dial and a Platinum 40 with ice blue roman dial (forgot how heavy platinum watches were).

I was really surprised at the 40, it is worlds away from the old DD2 and actually looked great on. I have tried on a DD2 previously but never the 40, always dismissed it as "too big". My daily wear is a 16570 and it wore about the same as that to my eyes, bigger dial yes but still very reasonable in size. The 36mm was perfectly fine, is a great size and something I am used to from DJ models I have owned over the years. However something about the DD40 seemed to work especially in the white metal. It didn't look over sized, gaudy or really flashy which I always assumed it would.

Now I have a real dilemma, my grail has always been a 36 but the 40 looked great on, fit well, was not flashy in a white metal and comes with the option of a black stick dial all of which are great. I am not going to rush into anything as this is a lot of money to me and don't want to make the wrong choice.

Has anyone made the move from a 36 up to a 40 and regretted it?

Also can I check, is the DD40 bracelet 20mm at the lugs tapering down to 16mm? It looked to be the same as the 36 side by side but just wanted to check that.

I never had the 36, but I do own the DD40 and I will say that you will have no regrets by going to the larger DD40. You said it yourself - it fits well and doesn't look large, unlike the DD II. The proportions on the DD40 are perfect, the lines are clean and there's nothing gaudy or bulky about it.

I think the bigger mistake is going to the 36 and then having the feeling later of "oh, this is just too small".

I tried both 36 and 40 last week and my initial reaction was that the 36 had better proportions.

The 40mm i think doesnt taper. 40mm in yg gold seems like alot for my 7.15" wrist. Something about a 36mm just feels better. I like to have my sports watches be 40mm.

Buy the 36mm and if you dont like it over time sell it. Buy the 40mm. Its not set on stone.

40mm seemed really flat where 36mm had some height. I like that.

The DD40 is the way to go. The 36mm size is outdated and too small. The DD2 just looked out of proportion for some reason.

I have both and wear each about equally. The 36 is a bit more “dressy” and even more comfortable. The DD40 I like for everyday.

Never moved from 36 to 40mm, yet the new 40mm has Rolex's new movement and ceramic tubes within the bracelet to great lower wear and tear.

DD40 FTW :)

I contemplated this too. The 36mm fits well and so does the 40mm so it's a really tough decision. And to add more to the mix, have you considered a PM Daytona?

The Daytona I actually really don’t like. I had one in SS a number of years ago and sold it 5 days later. If going PM then it will be a DD for sure. It’s just the size now that is the issue. Which to choose.

The 36 is perfection but the 40 a more contemporary look

+1. Totally agree. Don’t think u would be happy in long run with 36 mm. Go for 40

Did you take some shots with it on your wrist?

The Day Date in white gold is such a beautiful thing - the more of it the better! I would definitely go for a 40 unless it looks totally wrong on you.

Each his own...... all your 3 statements I don't agree. Besides the fact that I love the older "no noise" movements.

Depends on wrist size. Mine is a 7.5 inch. The DD40 was just right and a perfect fit. For myself a 36mm is a no-go.

With a 7.5 inch wrist I’m guessing it fit without adding or removing a link?

6.75 inch here... also contemplating a DD and the 40 just seems to wear nicer on my wrist. Whenever I try on the 36 it just seems small to me , but I’m used to wearing 38-41mm watches.

At the AD it fit my wrist perfectly as-is. No need to even size the bracelet.

Nice. Ideal not having to deal with sizing. Looked like I would need two links out of the president when trying today. Oysters I take one link out.

Go for the DD40 - It's really a DD38.5 so it isn't much larger than the 36

Besides my 41mm RO, I don't wear anything over 40mm and prefer watches that wear even smaller than 40, like the Daytona.

I think you can go with either 36 or 44 for the DD. If I was buying, I'd likely lean towards the 36, but whatever sings to you more. I would not worry about any people that say 36 is a woman's watch or an outdated size. That is not true.

The DD40 is definitely the way to go. My RG olive dial DD has turned into my absolute favorite watch. It actually wears much smaller than any other watch I have, but since it's solid gold it still has a lot of presence. a 36mm would have been way too small for my 8in wrist.

I tried on the DD40, WG rhodium strips, at an AD Basel event a few years back and I knew I wouldn’t be happy unless I obtained. I have to give up a SS Daytona (last model) and a TT DJ41, but I couldn’t be happier. Such an amazing watch on the wrist, flies under the radar and always makes me smile. Along with my 5-digit Sub and Pepsi, I think I’m done.

I recommend you get the 40, assuming you’re over ~6.5”

I agree and it’s killing me. I have an SD43, GMTII LN, and get the next SS SkyD Blue from my AD. But often I find myself ready to chuck it all for a DD40, WG Green or Blue dial.

I’m trying to figure out how to add... the wife wouldn’t be thrilled with a surprise PM, especially after getting the SkyD (if that ever happens).

If you’ve tried it in the metal and loved it, that is the ultimate confirmation that the watch is right for you.

Oh how exciting!

I measure it at 39.5, but yes it isn't exactly 40.0 mm
