Jumbo tiger prawns..!

While at our winter home in Sri lanka for 6 months of the year, we enjoy what I think has to be some of the largest if not the largest shrimp in the world. These range from 3 to 6 per kilo. You are looking at them cleaned, shelled and ready to broil on a 13 inch full size dinner plate. The literally swell/plump up to mega size when cooked. There is only one place here in Sri Lanka where they are found and thats up in the NE Part of the Island called KALKUDAH Bay. We will make several trips up here and buy 10-15 kilos at a time and bring them back with us to Colombo to eat. I love SHRIMP and Beer and these bad boys are the grand daddy of them all. I have never ever seen any shrimp this large anywhere to buy and back home in Ohio all I get to buy is tank raised crap from VIET NAM at COSTCO...

Excellent. Yum. Those are some biggins. Your avatar says you are from Ohio yet you spend six months of the year in Sri Lanka? Very cool. I would love to hear more about what it’s like there. Thanks for the pictures.

I have been coming to Sri lanka since 1975 when I was a very young Marine PPSU guy at the American Embassy in Colombo. I have virtually fallen in love with this place for the unreal awesome weather of 365 days a year and love the food too. My wide of 44 years is from here and we have quite honestly the best of both worlds in my opinion. I am a very serious road cyclist logging close to 9000 miles per year and the weather here allow me to cycle every single day. I am also extremely careful of what I eat and the fruits here are over 65% of my diet every single day. We all have our reasons for something and this awesome place just works for me. If it were not for my children and grandchildren, I would be here year round with zero regrets.

My wife and I are very central to all the places we love traveling to like Dubai, Maldives, Bangkok, Singapore, Seychelles, Jakarta etc etc all being within 4 hours of Sri Lanka. This extreme heat and humidity may not be for everyone but it sure is for me from freezing ass cold NW Ohio along the banks of lake Erie..Well here is just the tip of the iceberg of why I love this place so much. I am already counting (DREDFULLY) the days until we return back in mid April to the damp, cold and ugly spring weather..:)

I have tried some shrimp like that once. They were very good and to me seemed like mini lobsters. Looks like you have the best of both worlds. Enjoy......

Quite honestly they are as big as most lobsters you would get at COSTCO or ALDI... It is hard to put in perspective how big these suckers are. I am a pig when it comes to eating food and it takes all I can to eat three of them. These are mainly for export to places like Singapore, Dubai and Europe to 5 star restaurants .. The weather here in Sri lanka is worth the price of admission in my opinion..Thanks..

When I was in Vietnam we had mantis quite a lot on the menu. Also some great tiger prawns too

It’s a great protein source

On Oahu there was a little shack on the road to North Shore that kept live ones that large. I’m sure they were aquacultured but from live to your mouth in 8 minutes was huge fresh taste.

That was 30 years ago in another life so don’t know if they are still around.

Jumbo Tiger Prawns South Indian Style

These are dynamite in spice/heat factor but ohhhhh so so good.. My shrimp intake here on the Emerald Isle is quite excessive to say the least...
