Why no 18k hallmark on WG 1803?

I have noticed that there is no 18k hallmark on the lugs of the 1960s-era WG Day-date. There is a very slight and hard-to-read hallmark on one lug, which I believe is the Helvetia (woman's head). However, unlike the YG 1803's, there is no 18k stamp. Does anyone know why as this seems odd? Intuitively, I would think that the 18k stamp is even more appropriate on WG to differentiate from SS.

I think some markets required the 18k stamp and other markets only required the hallmark.

Hi Matt, thanks for that quick reply. Interesting...is the hallmark the Helvetia (woman's head)? I can't tell on my watch from 1963 as it seems to be worn or very hard to decipher.

Yes, the Helvetia hallmark was used up until 1995.

Thanks for that reference. Great info there. I had actually read that before but couldn't find the answer to my original question.

Great link Matt, thanks for posting. Here's an interesting article on hallmarks I found yesterday:

Hey Dave, great article. Thanks for sharing that. Unfortunately, we all probably have a bit too much free time on our hands now, but I'm enjoying keeping up on this forum. I hope everyone stays safe and healthy.

Some have only one mark some have both hallmarks depends on manufacturing date

Hi David, I hope you and your family are well and staying healthy. I always appreciate your knowledgeable input. I read your detailed post on hallmarks, but couldn't find the answer to my question. I just found it an interesting observation that my WG 1803 from 1963 has no 18k stamp, but my YG 1803 from 1969 does have the 18k stamp.

It’s not a white gold thing happens on both yg and white gold
