Worth an email?

This is more so aimed at UK members.

Obviously all of the UK ADs are currently closed due to the lockdown but there seems to be people still getting allocated watches.

There are a few watches I am still interested in picking up despite the current climate. Is it worth emailing a couple of ADs making them aware Im ready to purchase?

Just wanted to find out if anyone else has done this?

I don’t want to seem distasteful/insensitive in this current climate but if there is a greater chance of getting the watch I’ve had my eye on for a while I thought it may be worth a shot.

As I said I just didn’t want to seem distasteful really, probably just overthinking it. Too much time on my hands these days!

I emailed an AD new to me, they responded pretty quick but they still said 18 month wait for a 116610LN Submariner.

I guess it would also depend on how well you know the AD’s.

I am in the U.S. and was working with a small family owned AD before they closed due to virus. I emailed them a week ago and didn’t hear back. (Not for SS). I think they are closed and won’t do any business until they reopen. I’d say send them a note. What do you have to lose? Until then, I’ll be waiting till mine reopens. Good luck!

If there was something I wanted I would be calling, texting, emailing to see if I could get it. Worse case is you get a polite decline due to lack of availability.

He's posting from London. For YEARS that's been one of the driest places to pick up a Rolex.

Ive found it hard to build a relationship without any buying history, AD’s in UK seem to be so aloof, saying that not much different when I’ve tried in Marbella, Cologne, Gibraltar and Barcelona on my recent visits.

As a small business owner, I can personally attest most small business owners are really hurting right now. If a client or potential client emailed me that they were still in the market for X, while most are holding onto what money they have, I would be thrilled. Now, I don't think they're going to say come on down, but you never know.

Thanks for all the responses guys.

Seems worth emailing then. One of the ADs I have a bit of history will, I bought a Omega SeaMaster from them in February. I am also known to a few of the guys in there as well as the manager. I’m on the list at a few others.

Nothing to loose i suppose.

With regards to small businesses, most of the ADs in Scotland are WOS or multichains.

True, I’ve been trying for 3 years only one AD has taken my details but still said basically no hope, all others totally disinterested.

It was absolutely insane a few years back before all the price hikes. Aside from currency conversion already giving around 20% off MSRP, you could stack the additional VAT refund for another guaranteed 12-13%. I could literally fly to London, stay the weekend, and still have my watch at a MUCH cheaper price than the US. It was a no brainer why UK was the first to experience shortages.

I emailed my AD earlier this week to let him know I am still in the market for a Sub. Got an email today to say they are receiving a shipment and they have 1 sub in the order if I wanted it. Definitely worth emailing, as there are people turning down pieces.

If Rolex is shut down it’s facility, how are they getting a shipment?

You might want to start looking at AD’s outside of London (easier said I know).

Over 3 months I picked up a DJ41, subC and SD43 all at rrp from the same AD.

I had been going in regularly before that, got a rapport with a SA and the rest is history.

But so what? They can't open for trade and you can't go out for non-essential purchases.

Here in continental Europe, many unemployment insurance systems provide for so called abridged work indemnities that will indemnify the shortfall in work of employees under lockdown (to prevent them from becoming unemployed). This is typically subject to a shortfall being inevitable and due to an extraneous cause. If one has to close one’s brick and mortar operation under a governmental order, the case is clear and one would likely be eligible to get the money. However, if one then started selling through the mail or online, the eligible shortfall would be reduced and, in addition one would open any lack of income to discussion as to its real reason (as it would become less clear whether such lack would be due to one’s shop being closed, an eligible motive for indemnities, or one’s insufficient commercial success as an e-commerce provider, which is not). Engaging in operations of this type is thus not necessarily advisable for smaller companies which don’t have the means to put a credible e-commerce operation together and bear the risk of it failing. Smaller ADs may thus be better off taking the indemnities as they stand for now and keeping the blinders shut.

True, but at least you know you can pick up your watch whenever things open up - even though its probably going to be months.

If they can post it then I would try, as much safe business as can be done now should be done - I just ordered a home food delivery, I was wondering if it was entirely safe but I want to support local businesses where I can in these tough times.

I have recently collected a GMT BLNR that was apparently turned down by a few clients. So the demand its falling clearly. I would email and or call them, why not?
