1974 Datejust 1601 correct box

I recently inherited a 1974 Datejust 1601 with 1570 movement. The original box and papers were lost. I am looking to find a replacement box, but I want it to be the correct box. I have done a general search online and I have found several Of the same year Datejust with different style boxes? What is the correct number on the bottom of the box for this model? Any help would be great!

Maybe if you search for a similar year DJ that's a full set and for sale you can get your answer from the listing. Otherwise I have no clue

There is no single “correct” answer to your question for many reasons. If you search through the TRF classifieds you could find some “era correct” ones.

Back in the early ‘70’s and for 2 decades later the AD’s in different countries used different suppliers for the presentation boxes. Oftentimes, the DJ could have been sold with any of 2-4 different boxes due to whatever was in the back room inventory.

Typically looking like this one, but be careful of generic lookalikes.

Here's a few more Rolex boxes from the early 1970s to maybe 1980. None have number codes on the bottom. These boxes were typically used for 16XX and 15xx references.

From searching for these over the last few years, and a lot of insight that Springer has posted about, these, I believe are later Bufkor boxes. Late 70s into the 80s.

The earliest ones had lighter green interiors and the gold Rolex symbol was on the left side of the inner top, like this one.

That is a nice USA Bufkor box from around 1984 when it was introduced. There are two previous versions that were made before this iteration. While the Bufor's were nice boxes, the one you depicted was not in use during 1974 - no matter what the dealer had in his back room

All those boxes, except for one possibly, are from the 1980s.

Someone or some site is providing you with incorrect information.

I know the box posted in this picture was the later Bufkor box. Would the first generation Bufkor box have been used for a 1974 Datejust? When I looked online for "complete" sets for a 1974 Datejusts it seemed they all had different boxes. I did find several 1974 Rolex watches with the first generation Bufkor box claiming to be original.

Do you know if the first generation Bufkor box would be correct. I found some 1974 Rolex "complete set" wathes online calming the first generation box was original?

Thanks for the insight, I've had these boxes for 30+ years, so I was mistaken how old some (most) of them are.

Hi all,
interesting topic and am interested in finding out the correct box (and papers) for a 1974 gold 6917 originally sold in Switzerland (italian Canton). Any clue?
Thanks in advance for your help.
Andrea
