Has Rolex ever hit a "bad patch"?

Hi guys,

Just wondering if Rolex ever hit a financial "bad patch" in their entire reign as some other watch companies may have?

And the first tosser who interprets that as "bald patch" gets banned!!

Cheers - JJ

Good Question JJ, I would submit they're going through one right now! I have no numbers to back me up or anything, just a feeling though...

P.S. All those Tossers are just jealous of your good looks JJ!!

I would assume the quartz revolution put them on some rocky soil, but I don't know.

I think Rolex were "forced" to introduce their famous OYSTERQUARTZ line-up in 1978 at the height of the quartz revolution in order to compete with the tremendous and sudden influx of quartz watches from Japan.

The line never did really take off in most countries, but did thriving business in the Middle East, especially places like Kuwait, Saudi Arabia, Dubai, Iran, Iraq and the like.

It was the first watch with a 11-jeweled quartz-linked motor driven mechanism and is still considered by many to be one of the best quartz watches ever produced.

There was a recent thread which stated that Rolex may have lost $900M in the recent Madoff Ponzi scandal

http://www.rolexforums.com/showthread.php?t=73657

I am sure there have been times in the past where Rolex has experienced a slow period due to the an economic downturn. It would be interesting to know

I dare say they've had bad times through the years, and the current climate won't be the best for them, especially with the price rises they're putting onto their range. I still can't believe how they've let this year go the way it has, with the price rises, the poor Basel showing and the way they continue their stringent policies, it's not the best way of setting out for quite possibly the worst year for luxury goods since records began!

I'll second the quartz/digital revolution! A lot of companies went under because of it.

quartz should become standard or atleast an option. no point to pay top $$ and have 4 - 6 sec error a day on your certified watch!! with money the company would save, they can add more gold n diamond to the watch with the same price ;o. can someone start a petition titled we want quartz...

OMG, this is the worst idea I have ever heard. It goes against everything I love about Rolex sport watches. I hate batteries, gold, diamonds and bling. Madness, complete madness.

That ties in with what my AD told me about Dallas RSC laying off 30 employees. It looks like Rolex is hurting just like everyone else!

im sure most ADs are reporting slow sales... so we can say the after the 1930s depression, this period also could be trying , however im sure Rolex has a massive reserve to sustain the recession...
