GMTIIC - Cyclops

Hi, I'm new to the forum and Rolex. I just purchased a GMT Master IIC and I think it's awesome!

I had always wanted a Submariner but I recently discovered the new style GMT and decided to pull the trigger. I love how the bezel looks different depending on the light.

One question so far: I really like the anti-reflective coating on the cyclops. Why isn't the whole crystal done that way?

Have a good weekend.

According to Rolex, AR coating would make the crystal look invisible and this would effect the design of their watch. I guess they want that "mirror-look" as it's incorporated in part of their designs.

James Dowling, interviewed Rolex execs and this is what was said.....I will find you the link.....

A similar question was brought up today in regards to the sapphire crystal.

Mr. James Dowling had the opportunity to interview Rolex during the recent Basel show. This was brought up in regards to AR

Quote:
Will Rolex introduce AR coatings on the glass?
No, except on the cyclops; if AR coating is used the glass essentially disappears, this is not something Rolex wish to do. In all Rolex watches the glass is an integral part of the design of the watch, which is why it sits above the bezel

I have thought about buying another crystal and giving it to my wife. She is an optician and she would apply an AR coating to the sapphire, as I think it would be great. Only problem being the price of the spare sapphire for the experiment.

$100.00 is worth it to see how it looks. the real coin is getting it put on and if you do not like it getting the old one put back on.

Sorry, How rude of me.

Welcome to the forum.

That is one hell of a watch you got there. I have posted dozens of photos of mine. I cannot stop taking pictures of it.

Enjoy yours for many years to come.

Just got off the phone with the tech rep at the local AD, and he will not sell me a new crystal. He said he will take my crystal off, give it to me and I can send it in for coating, return it to him and he will replace back on my watch free of charge. Hmmmmmm.

Had anti-reflective coating on my eyeglasses. Hated it -

- Susceptible to scratches, which look terrible. You have a nearly scratchproof crystal - why coat it with something that scratches?

- I have found suntan lotions and sprays eat the coating and strips it away in pieces

- It is a fingerprint magnet, and fingerprints look terrible on it.

- It has a strange bluish-green tint that changes how the dial looks. To me, it just looks weird

Most of these issues are solved with inside-only coating, but to me, the coating causes more problems than it solves.

As you said, wouldn't an inside-only coating solve all these problems and also give all the benefits?

One thing I really miss about my Omega Seamaster was the AR coating on the inside, it sure looked great

He's putting it on the inside and it won't get harmed.
