Manual winding question

Hi, I have Submariner Date 16610. Just gotten it back from a full service. So, I only learned that you could manually wind an automatic watch recently after my Submariner stop working, so I have no reference as to how it’s suppose to behave. Right now, if the watch has completely stopped, it will takes about 40 winds before the watch will start moving again. Just wondering if this is normal? Thanks in advance for your insight.

It can take a fair bit of winding to get it going, unlike some other brands/movements. 40 is a lot to just get it moving. I would guess that those were not 40 full turns. Give it full 360* turns 50-60 times and it should be fully wound.

To manually wind correctly you only wind clockwise only, to fully wind your watch it would need 40 full crown turns clockwise only. And even after a wind some might need a gentle swirld to get them started

Try this: wind it 10-15 times. Gently shake the watch a few times (nothing too harsh). It’ll probably start running.

There are a lot of forces that need to be overcome before any machine goes into full operation.

If you give it a few winds, then tap it or give it a little shake, those forces will shift and it will start. It's pretty normal.

At 30 turns my DJII needs a tap or two to get going, at 40 turns it usually starts on its own from being completely stopped.....other non Rolex pieces I own take pretty close to the same.

I have a Ulysse Nardin Marine that takes a whopping 130-140 turns to get to the full power reserve, at first I thought it was broke but after looking thru the manual it states that it takes about that to get there, I have never wound it that many turns since then as it does not need to be at full power
