For the love of all that is holy can someone PLEASE explain this to me!? Question reg

I have noticed on many PP models that have an annual calenday displayed at the top from left to right - day of week - numerical day of month (at 12 o’clock) - month - the day of week window is almost always larger than the month window. Is there a reason for this? It bugs the hell out of me! It throws the symmetry of the dial off and, within each window, there are always only 3 letters displayed, so shouldn’t they be the same size?

Here are some pictures with examples. Please let me know if you see what I’m talking about. To me, it makes the text within the month window look squished and scrunched together.

The discs are the same size, but you're fitting 36 letters on the month wheel (12 x 3) and only 21 letters on the weekday wheel (7 x 3). Patek made a design choice and opted to utilize that extra space to make the weekday letters larger.

Makes sense. I'm no designer, but I think it would look better if they had shrunk the text of the weekday to match that of the month. Thoughts?

It's a tradeoff between maximizing symmetry and readability. Check out the movement image below... in fact none of the fonts are the same size (day, weekday, month), but rather the largest possible for the size of the respective ring. I'm with you though, my preference sides with symmetry

Right on. Thank you for the info and picture. Symmetry for me. Not taking anything away from the watches; they are amazing. At least now I know there’s a reason for the difference!

When you take a look at yours now, is it noticeable, or are the windows on yours the same size?

What bothers me most is the central pinion cutting through the subdial.

I had never noticed this before now even on blown up pictures online so it does not bother me. Hopefully it does not become a thing for me now that you have pointed it out!

Agree this is better but the outsized font for the day of the month in the middle is also a little weird on the 5208.

I had not noticed the issue spotted by the OP but maybe be it has been the reason for why I haven't warmed up to any of three window AC / ACC models.

Well, I've not noticed this before, but once seen...

Read all the responses but still can't see a single reason justifying different sized windows. sorry.

Great question, great answer and pics. Annoying as hell to me, so I won't have one in that format.

For just a small fee, you can have... . Thanks for finding that -- I couldn't find an example with 3 windows!

Hard to see in real life but once seen could become a bugbear if you are an anti-5712 symmetrist and boy we used to have alot of those pre-hype.

I am really sorry if I ruined some of these watches for anyone who hadn't noticed this before. I think the reason I noticed it is because I am a bit OCD about certain things and it is just the way my brain works.

I hope this is being said playfully and not seriously. PP makes some of the most complicated, stunning watches in the world, they should have no problem making sure something like this is symmetrical and perfect. The "best they could" with the price they charge per watch should be absolutely flawless.

Spot on. Inexcusable at PP's level of horology.
