GMT IIc accuracy

Well, I've had my GMT IIc for 5 days now, and the time is spot on! It hasn't lost or gained one second yet! Another reason to love this watch!

At first my GMT c was gaining 10 - 15 seconds a day! Not very happy. After 4 weeks of constant wear it seems to of settled down and now gains less than 10 seconds a week. Very happy!

Symptoms of a temporally magnetised watch is
to speed up or stop completely and not slow down.
And its normally the hair-spring that gets magnetised the new GMT has the in-house parachrome hair-spring which according to the Rolex hype is totally anti-magnetic.

Crap! Sorry to hear that Rob! I wonder if there's any way to "de-magnetize" it?

No, they all feel pretty much the same, but if I had to pick one, I'd say the Yacht-Master might feel just a tad heavier than the others.

Demagnetization is a fairly simple operation done by a watchmaker. The case does not need to be opened.

You basically pass the watch thru a big coil of wire (with many turns) that has a strong AC current running thru it.

As we remember, passing a DC current thru a coil generates a magnetic field, which can magnetize things. Passing AC, which alternates direction 60 times/second, will demagnetize due to the reversing current which effectively "cancels out" the magnetism in the watch.

The hairspring in the GMT-IIc is supposedly immune to magnetic effects, tho I've heard other parts of the watch can be magnetized.

My GMT-IIc is very accurate on the wrist. But setting it down flat or on a winder over many days, it loses time. It definitely wants to be worn.

Yes, it wears heavier than the GMTII or the Expy, for sure. But the fit is better.

I'm still tyring to get used to the square-ish face of it. The previous GMT is decidedly more round in appearance due to the lack of the supercase.

Also, the supercase makes turning the bezel different. On the older style GMTII, you turn the bezel easily from the sides of the watch, as it hangs over more of the case. With the supercase, the bezel doesn't hang over the majority of the case, so you end up turning it from the top, using some downward pressure on the bezel, as opposed to grasping it from the sides.

From my 1 year experience in wearing self winding Rolex, I discovered that the best way to keep accurate time is wearing the watch constantly like what Lionel is saying.

I forgot I think it has been 14 days and I am off six seconds. I was off six seconds at 10 days though? I think if you pay attention to it, it is off sometimes by 10 seconds but the very next minute it is off like 4 seconds? Who knows I am going for one month and then will see what I come up with?

Good luck let us know if it stays this way.

I know some may cast doubt on my integrity, but... I am running about 2 seconds fast. Full stop. Since setting it on the 1st March!

So in just over 5 weeks, I have gained 2 seconds.

I am astounded.

When I bought it in October last year, I was running about 3-4 seconds a day SLOW. Since then it has settled to just about perfect accuracy.

I now understand all the other GMTIIc owners raving about accuracy.

Cheers to you and me.

Ok, so last night I checked the accuracy again, and it had lost almost a full second, but as of right now, it's spot on again. I love it!

Settling in

Your watch will vary in about 6-12 months, but will remain very accurate, probably within +- 3 seconds a day.

Mine has lost 5 seconds since Sunday.

It's only 10 days old so it will probably still be running in.

18 days since getting back from a ski trip, when I wound up the watch and put it back on, it has gained less than a second. 6 months old. When I got it it lost about 1/3 of a second a day. Unbelievable.

I never take my GMT IIc off and I don't monitor it to the second, but I can tell you that there is no need to reset it. It's the most accurate mechanical watch I've ever owned, and much more accurate than my original GMT from 1979.

Okay so I just checked mine again at the end of yet another week. I am almost positive that I set the time on March 20th here at work at around 1 PM. It is now been 21 days and I am only 4 seconds fast. That is an astonishing .1904 seconds a day.
