Service Estimate received from the Dallas RSC...
I posted this in another thread, but thought it would be more appropriate here.
I received the service estimate from the Dallas RSC via email for my Sub Date 116610 G series papers dated 10/25/2012. Recommend service / parts = full service. I approved the service estimate electronically. Approx. 8 weeks. Now the wait begins... Watch condition stated that the crystal is scratched, but they didn't recommend to replace it. I don't recall seeing any scratches. Maybe some micro hairlines...? Would you recommend just having them replace it? How much? About $125?

Not sure of the price of the crystal but the $125 sounds about right. While they have it why not get it done. Should be 10 years or more before it goes back. In the end not a lot of money.

And probably no labor charge since they will be changing crystal during the full service. I will call them and ask...

I emailed them this morning and they already got back to me:
"The technicians are considering the scratches as cosmetic and is not necessary to replace. They evaluate the watches using a high powered loupe so it is possible the scratches are faint and not visible to the naked eye. However, if you would like to replace it the cost for a new crystal is $133.40. Let us know if you would like a new crystal and we can revise your estimate." So, I'm still undecided, but leaning towards replacement (just barely though)...

What other parts are they going to be replacing? I personally prefer to keep my watch as close to original as possible.

Good point. No other parts are going to be replaced.

micro scratches are not uncommon and will likely be present after a few weeks of wear. No point in replacing a sapphire crystal unless necessary.
They will be replacing all of the parts in the movement that are worn or considered expendable.

Another good point. I’m not anal about micro scratches. Plus, I will still have the original crystal and not the service crystal with the “S” on the cornet. Not a deal breaker, but no need to replace if not necessary.

Agree with others, microscratches happen and should not in any way interfere with the water proofness. May as well keep the original crystal for now imho to keep her all-original.

Rolex no longer uses the S designation on service sapphire crystals.

I'm a little ticked that you received your estimate already. I took my GMT to local AD on March 9th. According to them "We always send our service work to the Lititz, PA service center" and that's where it supposedly is. So, I'm in NC and they sent mine to PA, and you're in Philly and they sent yours to Texas? What the heck is going on??

For a 130 bucks, I would just have them do it.

I initially told them no, but should still have time if I decide to change my mind...

Cannot see any point in changing the crystal save your money if you cannot see any scratches why bother.

Often people are confused because they haven't seen any scratches. It is just to give people the option, because some do notice and do want it replaced. ![]() |

I contacted the Dallas RSC for a status update on Friday. My watch is in the final stages and if all goes well with testing, it will be completed this week. I can’t wait to get it back. It’s been almost 8 weeks.

My SubC service was completed early this week. They shipped it yesterday and received this morning. I shipped it to them on 5/5, so just over 9 weeks door-to-door.
Thing looks brand spanking new. They did an amazing job on the refinishing. I put a beating on the case and bracelet. Thumbs up to the Dallas RSC ![]()
