Need advice

To start my story had a rough teenage years. Saved and saved and bought a 16753 GMT Master at the age of 17 for 3k. Wanted it very much at the time. Wore it through hard times until the age of 19 when I started a Rolex buying spree. Sold it for 4200. Then got into day dates and eventually got the one I always wanted in early 20s 118238 currently still have now. Lately I miss the GMT master it reminds me of a good but bad time in my youth. I don’t have enough money to add a gmt at current values. So I keep pondering selling my day date for a gmt and maybe buying a date just with left over profits. I am considering my original model or the new ss models. Is that a foolish decision? If ever wanted dd back would I loose too much money? I miss the utility and simpler style of gmt. I also wear a large gold chain, bracelet and ring daily. What are you thoughts? Sorry for rant!

If you feel strongly you buy what will give you peace of mind when looking at your wrist. But the sentiments I dont think will be the same when you buy this new GMT because the story is attached to the previous one you sold. So if you are buy because of your past story dont because this new purchase will have a new story to it.

Hi Dan, it appears you want to reminisce in the nostalgia of your youth through the 16753 you also do not want to let got of the memories tied to your 118238. I suggest striving towards getting the 16753 while still keeping the Day Date. You'll get there, 100%.

I agree with the posts thus far -- a replacement GMT will not have the same significance as your original. Additionally, given the description of your other regular jewelry, the DD fits in perfectly with your style. Given that, and the general desirableness of the DD, does not make sense to part with it.

Regarding the the GMT, if you are not married to the image of a GMT Master/Master II, and really want the utility that it offers without the price tag, consider either a 5-digit Explorer II or a Tudor GMT. Best wishes!

Go for it! I'm facing a similar dilemma myself. Sold off a birth year 16760 (purchased the day I was born, my name on the papers) so am on the hunt now trying to find another to replace it. Mine also had the "no date" dial. I know it wont be the same, but I feel that having a 'new to me' of my old watch will allow me to remember some of the things from my past, but also start to form new memories with that model.

The Datejust will never fill the void of your Day Date, and the GMT will never have the wrist presence you have now. Considering your other yellow gold rings, bracelets, I think I recall from previous posted pics, your current watch pairs best. It's a tough call when curiosity knocks, worst case scenario, you will be trading, selling to regain the Day Date. Good luck Dan, in time you will make the right decision for yourself!

I think you should do it...you have a connection to that watch.

I still kick myself for not buying a NIB Navitimer for 2k, this was 20+ years ago. I still want one, but I don't really want another Chronograph as I have a Speedmaster. All of us WIS's have a "one that got away" story, or two. Or five.

I never thought I would miss my lowly 16233 DJ until it was gone. I also did not realize how insane the Rolex market has become until it was gone.

anyway seems if you sell the day date (don't recommend it) you will barely afford a gmt with it, not to mention be able to find one at msrp.
i'd say save for the next piece and you will soon have it, and it will mean so much more.

Don't sell the Day Date. It's the top of the line. Just save up until you can afford the GMT as well. You will be much happier that way.

I wouldn’t use a card or credit for any purchase like that. Cash only. I usually set aside a watch fund when it reaches a certain level about twice a year I buy a new watch. Only one rolex at the moment but I have other gold watches and estate watch stuff. Also do the same for large jewelry purchases.

Have about 200k worth of bullion and jewelry couldn’t part with any of it. I’m old school got different sets for different days.
