Sotheby's Important Watches Auction
Hello,
My inquiry relates to this watch: https://www.sothebys.com/en/buy/auct...iled?locale=en According to my Mondani book, the watch's serial number would imply it's a 6241, but the auction site says 6238 - which is a model I do not have in my book. I am sure there's a reality outside what's shown in my book of course:) Does anyone have any sister/cousin watches of this one, or have any observations on the item themselves that they'd like to share? It's a day left of the auction, but I would have suspected the bids to have come in higher. Thanks |

I believe this watch have been posted on this site. It’s an odd bird.
https://www.rolexforums.com/showthread.php?t=725034 I would not put too much trust into watch books like Mondanis. See it more as pretty pictures rather than knowledge.

Lol, excellent and interesting point re: Mondani books.
It is interesting to see a piece that couldn't really pass the smell test here, wind up being at Sothebys for 6 figures. |

I think the s/n on this one predates 6241 manufacture, but is in the timeframe when the 6238 was produced. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk Pro

All I can add is a comparison with my GMT 1675 from Tiffany BH, circa 1974. Mine is at a slight angle compared to the other. Always thought the Tiffany script looked like it was done by an apprentice or something.

It is still a very nice and rare piece even if it doesn’t look like the reference number would suggest. Coming from the original owner it gives it some provenance and it is not completely unheard of that such late serials would have parts from a later model. Rolex made very few gold chronos and no one can say this is wrong. It just doesnt fit the bill.
Sothebys presented it in a nice way and it will sell close to their low estimate. Everyone will be happy. If it would have had 6241 as a reference number the price would have been closer to the high estimate of 250k or above.

I'm looking at the results. Seems like A LOT didn't sell at all. A lot of mediocre pieces.
I don't get some prices though. This Speedmaster, you can pick it up for 10-11k EURO, and someone bid 11.250 USD/10k euro + extra costs?! Which makes it more expensive. https://www.sothebys.com/en/buy/auct...on-a-pink-gold 27.500 USD for a Daytona C https://www.sothebys.com/en/buy/auct...tainless-steel |

Sotheby's Important Watches Auction
Well, the one that this thread started with actually sold within its estimate.
Few auctions go 100% when values are high and reserves reflect such optimistic expectations. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk Pro

I remember several auctions from 2-3-4 years ago with mostly decent pieces and everyone hitting their number and selling. Quickly looking at the current auction it feels like they only sold 35 percent of what they were offering. |
