Out with the Old - In with the New

Got my forty year old 31 mm TT back from the service center where it underwent a complete overhaul. And also received my new 34 mm Date from the AD in Eugene, Oregon . The 34 mm Date is a perfect compliment for my 6 ¼ inch wrist. The 34 watch and oyster bracelet visually work together as an ensemble. On my wrist the larger mm sizes cause the time piece to dominate the look, relegating the bracelet as an after thought. The 36 is too big and the 41 looks like a dinner plate strapped to my wrist.

I bought the 31 mm in about 1980 and have worn this time piece every day since. Never babied it. I wore it in hot tubs, saunas, under the ocean, playing tennis, river rafting, hiking/camping – every where. Now I’m gifting the 31 to my sister.

The 34 Date with the fluted bezel and white face is just beautiful. For now I can’t stop looking at it, but that also could be because it definitely has a heaver feeling than the 31. I probably would have opted for a two tone if that option was available, but on the other hand the 34 white gold stainless steel has an under-the-radar elegance.

I’ve got seventy-one years on my odometer and plan to be wearing my new 34 Date for the next forty years as my only watch. And no babying for this baby.

BTW, I am left handed so I wear my 34 Date on my right wrist. The idea being that there's less wear and tear on the subordinate hand.

Fellow lefty here, both beautiful watches, your sister is getting an heirloom. Wear the new one in good health.

Great story - thanks for sharing. I bought matching TT DJs in 1981 - 24mm for my wife (champagne dial), 36mm for me (black dial), both fluted with the Jubilee bracelet. She's worn it everyday since and it doesn't leave her wrist day or night. Had it serviced several times and she refuses to part with it. The hollow bracelet links and small size fit her very well (she's very petite), and she doesn't like the sizing of the new models, even though they seem modest on paper.

I gave my watch to my son on his 21st birthday, nearly 25 years ago, and I've missed it ever since. Been thinking of getting another (see my many posts, if you want the full story), but I'm leaning toward the 39mm OP/white dial. I'm the same "vintage" as the OP, so my AD warned me that the watch may arrive "too late for you to enjoy". We'll see. One thing about being a "senior" - the price I paid for BOTH TT watches in 1981 is less than the price of a single steel non-fluted Oyster bracelet DJ 36 today.

Thank you all for your kind words and camaraderie.
LENCAP - Good reminiscence. The OP with the white dial was also under consideration for me. There are a number of OP reviews on YouTube. The OP's "white" dial isn't snow white, its a kind of satiny white curtain white. ALSO - You said: "One thing about being a "senior" - IMO We're not "seniors". I like to describe us as being in "late youth".
Rumor has it that Rolex might discontinue the 34 Date. Any body know if that's true ?

How many times did you have your 31 serviced in the 40 years? Was the recent major service the first and only?
