The psychology of the Pepsi

Many have been commenting on and following the recent thread seeming to express confusion or doubt about the Pepsi color configuration. A lot of helpful historical context was provided by members in that thread, as well as other members expressing their love for Pepsis.

I fall into the camp of thinking that the Pepsi configuration, not only on the Rolex GMT and Tudor GMT, but also on most rotating bezel watches, is pretty cool. Every time I see one, whether it be Rolex/Tudor, the venerable Seiko SKX, or even the Timex Q, I am mesmerized. That color combo is just so cool! I know that many (maybe the majority?) here like Pepsis.

At the same time, I know that there are those that, with no bias or contextual baggage, dislike the Pepsi configuration. For example, my significant other thinks any Pepsi looks ugly/comical. She means no offense, but that is just her gut reaction, as a normal non-WIS person. And I know she's not alone...I remember seeing a YouTube influencer's video where he asked his girlfriend to react to various popular watches. Her interest is fashion and design, and when the Rolex GMT Pepsi popped up, her response was more or less one of disgust. He was slightly crestfallen, because he, like many here, really digs the Pepsi!

So I'll ask the reverse question here: Is there a pattern or psychology behind those who genuinely, without insecurity or bias, dislike the Pepsi color scheme? I know that I don't understand it!

My wife thinks it’s a child’s watch. I happen to strongly disagree and will make it a point to change her mind once I get one.

Before I knew how hard to get the Pepsi was, and it’s history, I really liked the seiko skx Pepsi

I just ended up buying the black one because I was scared red and blue would be a little too much color for a daily watch

I eventually bought a Padi Seiko Turtle and loved the colors and it was my daily!

But! Tastes change...

There was a time when I loved the hulk and wanted one really bad.

Now I feel like I could never wear a watch with both a green dial and green bezel.

Still love the OP34 with green dial though!

First time I showed to my wife, she said ew!

When I showed her a sub (black) she said now that's a beautiful, classy watch.

Take it for what its worth, everyone has different take on it. Having said that, the hype train of Pepsi perhaps makes it more desirable than it is in reality. To me its the most beautiful sports watch. I still like the colourful aluminum bezel more than the pink or ceramic. In all honesty, I dig it somewhat less than I used to when I first discovered Rolex GMT.

I used to think of Rolex as be all, then I held a PP in my hand, just a Calatrava and I was mesmerized. I truly understood what high horology is all about and why Rolex isn't big 3. Not to steer the thread here, just sharing my thoughts.

A thread on this isn't needed as there is already enough comments in the other thread that shows many who don't like it.
It's universal common sense that there will always be some in any given audience who don't like something because beauty is highly subjective.
Why don't they like it, because there own myriad of reasons, I'm fine with that. Do you really need to know the details of why someone doesn't like the Airking or Explorer 2, sorry but to me this is a humble call to a bash session.

No matter how many haters and opinions jump out of the closet, the absent stock and years long lists and absurd market price don't lie. It's a beautiful watch to higher percentage in the audience than not.

when I first noticed a pepsi bezel way back when I began collecting watches, I hated the look. I thought it was just plain stupid aesthetically. Goofy. Embarrassing.

Today I would happily wear a pepsi. I've worn a coke daily for about a year too. I'm not really sure how I got from there to here...

My wife wasn't that harsh but let's just say she is much more appreciative of my Sea-Dweller than Pepsi Meteorite in the looks department, more masculine.

On the other hand she has since been educated by me and other WIS that we talked to on the Pepsi and now she really appreciate it for what it is.

My wife bought me a 1675 as her wedding gift in 1976. She loves the watch as much as I do.

I am not sure looks have anything to do with demand. The speculation of a particular watch being in demand is good enough for others to buy it. Personal style and taste has become a rare second or third thought in a Rolex purchase.

I sold it after my not wearing it mostly and my wife keep telling me it looked like a Childs watch and the rootbeer and hulk were so much nicer.

I have a 16710.
I like the pepsi version alot, but when I tire of it I install the coke or black insert.
Nice to have options!

I hear you. My wife would rather have a LV bag or a necklace than a watch. She can care less and never pays attention to it. However she knows I love watches (obviously) and so sometimes she pretend asks me to shwo initerest when she sees a watch on tv that I like.

Once on Fox NFL Sunday, someone was wearing a PP Prepetual and she asked me about it. I said its Patek Phillippe. She genuinely exclaimed, "pay tax?" what kind of watch is that? I still laugh about it to this day.

There are 50 other watches I would rather have.

BTW, if you ask 100 normal everyday people to point to a picture of a watch they equate with concepts such as class, timeless, luxury, and expensive, I think most people would select watches that look like a gold Presidential or Cartier — not one with big white bubbles on the dial, weird looking hands, and cartoon colors around the case.

We know what a Rolex Pepsi timepiece is; 99% of the planet doesn’t care.

This is soooo true with a lot of watches. Some look so good in pics and on other people but when you see it on your wrist, the magic and connection just isn’t there. Normally this is not a problem in the old days when you could try on a watch but now you have to pay up for the grand experiment. Wouldn’t it be great if Rolex dealers had floor models that were dummy watches you could try on back to back?? Just to get a idea of color and size.

No, It would be great if they had actual watches you could not only try on, but purchase.

I love the Pepsi as a “fun” watch with its colors. Do not wear mine with more formal clothing.

I always value women's opinion on watches, especially non-WIS, as this assessment is not clouded by forum hype or market hype.

It also proves what I've suspected all along: we men really have no taste, and we justify our lack of taste with numbers.
"the Pepsi is not ugly! Besides, it sells for a premium in the secondary market!"

get the 16710, and get the other bezel insert colors. you can change it for the Pepsi for your own indulgence. And you can swap it for the all-black for your wife's approval.

The Pepsi itch got to me after many years of it just being an also ran just as Subs were, only loving Datejusts for years before even looking at any sports models. The new one didn't do much for me at all after trying it on so I ended up buying a Blnr after my first Gmt, an Expll. That didn't cure the itch, kept looking off and on while the prices kept climbing until I found the right 16710 which has become one of my very faves.

Let’s be honest, if the Pepsi was more widely available, it wouldn’t be nearly as desirable. In fact, it would probably rank below the Sub on the desirability scale (just like it did in the pre-ceramic days).
