Didn't think it would happen in Hong Kong....

Someone got seriously injured for his green dialed gold Daytona.

Shocking and sad. Hope he recovers fully and has insurance on the watch.

Reading these stories makes you think twice about wearing luxury items.

I hope they get caught.
And if they don't get caught, I hope the watch was a fake.

Its happening more and more. Someone got killed outside Harrods in London for their Hulk. This made me sell mine unfortunately. Felt it was too recognisable to the wrong people.

Very sad. Social media has made these watches easily recognizable which attracts the wrong type of people. During times of economic struggle, the issue will worsen

Hence the merits of a nice 1680 or 1665 - special yet covert enough to elude the attention of the common thief. Them modern rolexes are a wee bit flash.

Rolex is the most recognizable watches in the world. If you have to walk alone in some places, it's better to hide it inside your pocket and take it out later.

you wouldn't think this an issue in HK though, especially inside in the MTR which is generally packed with people.

Rolex is probably one of the most common / worn watch in HK. It may be an exaggeration but one out of every 10 guys in HK wears that brand in the open. Rolex in HK is as common as G-Shock/Citizen in the US.

I very recently was being sized up by a character who was as out of place in Whole Foods as a pair of brown shoes at a black tie affair. Especially since he did not have a shopping cart or basket and kept winding up next to me in every aisle looking at the most odd/random items. Finally I gave him a look that let him know I knew what he was doing and started off and then stopped short, he almost walked into me. Stood there and made him walk in front of me, he then turned right I went left and that was the last I saw of him.

Was fully expecting to see him or his buddies in the parking lot. But happy to say the walk to the car was uneventful.

But decided that it’s not worth wearing my Rolex’s during the day in public. Over the years I’ve heard of many people getting their watches and jewelry stolen in shopping center parking lots and never thought much about it. I’ve got a different attitude these days.

Yes Miami but I think you can start thinking about this kind of stuff everywhere. It’s happening in places it never used to and getting worse in places where it’s been happening.

Hope it gets better for you HK members before it gets worse. Was there only once but loved every minute of it.

Good advice about covering the watch up. This poor fellow was wearing a T-shirt with short sleeves putting the watch in plain view for thieves.

Would be more sad if all of those were fakes. I read that hong kong is also a hub for fake watches.

If you have yellow gold and blingy luxury watch(be it Rolex or any high end brand), you should not be traveling in public transportation. As simple as that!

In the past, the folks who bought those type of watches were fairly wealthy and did not use public transportation much at all. With all the media hype on watches more people are buying high end luxury watches who may not appreciate the idea that traveling within the masses with overt luxury goods is never a good idea. Then as now.

According to the evening news, it wasn’t an opportunistic robbery. The guy posted his watch for sale and was meeting the “buyer” at Tai Wai MTR Station. He was robbed and beaten by the thieves posing as buyers.

It has happened before and will happen again, so it is nothing new.

Many people wear expensive watches in Hong Kong and no-one bats an eye. Rolex watches are very common here!

Very sad, and violence is on the rise here in NYC as well with record amounts of shootings and robberies.

A friend of mine's mother and sister got mugged on 5th Avenue near Saks for their pocketbooks. Another story nearby where a reality show star (named Foodgod) got robbed of his Richard Mille watch in Englewood NJ.

Due to this I am asking my wife to put her expensive jewelry in our safety deposit box until things cool down.

Unfortunately it's the world we live in, it's everywhere and no one is immune. Always have to be smart, observant and vigilant when wearing something as visible as a Rolex or other luxury item. It's everywhere and that's just the way it is.

That is one case. Two other is not, one in a parking lot and one was a watch store owner, they were waiting outside.

Kinda true, unfortunately. Even SS black dial sports models is not a good idea. I've had my moments.

Wow, that is so sad. One reason I don't wear high end items in certain parts of the city. When I do travel abroad even though I may wear one of my nice watches, I end up putting it in the hotel safe (with my passport and cash) to avoid issues like this.

HMMM. Strikes me as a setup. Watch in a bag? Selling face-to-face in a subway station.
