Buying multiple (unwanted?) watches to curry favor with AD

Do people really do this? Is it just me or is this literally completely insane and asinine?

People do and it's not insane as others say.

Let's say I want a Pepsi, but I refuse to pay a flipper/grey-seller the market-price.

I can buy a watch for myself that I'd want anyways and maybe 3 pieces I can get rid of at a small loss. (2000-3000$ loss combined - MAYBE).

If that would give me the possibility to buy something worth $16k for $9k - why would that ever be stupid?

Well if you believe what it says on the net they do and everything on the net is gospel true, which many seem to believe today.

I think it is somewhat crazy to do it in a short time-span just to get a specific watch. Or to buy anything you don't want, really.

However, many people buy/sell watches as they get bored with them. So i think its easy to, after some years, have racked up 100-150k spending with an AD just from buying, and then selling after some time and getting a new piece at the AD, etc.

Yep. Just like people on here who pay double MSRP for a steel sports watch.

Anything to get a Rolex watch so they can compete with their friends.

Of course they do. If you want hard to get PPs and Rolex you need to create a relationship with your AD. Some ADs don't care and when a shipment comes in first through the door gets it, but most decide who gets priority. If you want a limited edition Ferrari or Porsche same deal. Heck even Hermes was the same. We had to buy the wife a bunch of Hermes items to get considered for her Birkin bag. Its the way it is to get things that dealers know are reselling over MSRP

No. It's Internet lore.

I mean, sure, maybe one of two guys did that a while back in order to get the watch that they just *had to have* but these days, inventory is so low that you really can't buy much of anything that has a crown on it. And the math, regardless of rationalization here, doesn't add up.

The AD I have good relationship with, can't promise any new GMTs or Daytona, even if you buy a PM watch from him. There is a list of PM buyers who are waiting for their BLRO, BLNR or Daytona.

Been dealing with the same AD for years. It's not a relationship that is dependent on the delivery of a Rolex sport model on demand. Which is probably why I will get a call the first or second week of September sometime...

YMMV (truly).

That’s where all the NIB tudors come from on the sales corner...people who buy them hoping their AD will sell them a sport Rolex....

Absolutely stupid to do this. Just pay the premium and you will save yourself $1000s and your will be guaranteed to get the piece you want.

I would never buy throw away watches. I’ve purchased a Sub, Rootbeer GMT, and a Datejust but I still can’t get a Batman on Jubilee.

I have asked other dealers if they have any interesting watches while I was buying jewelry for my wife, since my friendly AD only sells Rolexes, and they always were like “if you buy this ring or necklace from us we will get you the watch that you want.” I was like “I seriously doubt that.”

I bought a very nice tennis bracelet for my wife and then I asked them if they could get me a James Cameron, and they told me they would put me on a “special list,” my usual AD manage to come through substantially faster and I still haven’t heard from the jewelry store.

That’s just until you spent 100k and they tell you actually you need to spend 1000k. I jest, but somewhat serious. Always a reason.

I just can’t bring myself to eat something called Spotted Dick... nor to buy watches that I don’t want.

I’ve had at least several explicitly state you need to be a “customer” to be on the list for the popular watches. Sad. But true.
