41mm Sub might make sense

If the new submariner lugs are indeed slimmer, it might make sense to go 41mm to offset the perception of a smaller size. Also, a larger colorway bezel would prevent swapping with current models if that is a concern to Rolex.

Plus, then they would have a suite of SS sport watches from 39mm-44mm:
39mm (Explorer 1/Airking), 40mm (Daytona/Yachtmaster/GMT/Milgauss), 41mm (Sub), 42mm (Explorer 2/YM2), 43mm (SD), and 44mm (DSSD)

Does anyone have a reference to historic Submariner sizes? I would assume they have not always been 40mm.

What is going to happen is that this will make the 11 series Submariners the last of the 40mm classic size and will become what everybody and their mother will be wanting in the future because its classic and blablahblah....but in reality it's because a- you can't buy it anymore and b- the 40mm has always been and will always be the perfect all around everybody size.

It will become a legend, the last one of the 40s regardless of lugs or anything else, you'll see.
I hope 41mm doesn't happen, I think it's the wrong move, all other brands even Panerai are going smaller.

Maybe they will give it the DJ41 treatment. Call it a 41mm watch when it it actually measures a little over 39mm. I don’t care too much about 40 vs. 41mm for a new Sub, but slimmer lugs would be the key for me. I just don’t care for the blocky look of the current Subs.

Also, it makes sense for Rolex to change the case size if they slim down the lugs, otherwise, they would be admitting they made a mistake with the current model if they keep the same size and just make the lugs thinner.

Nah I'd rather have the 40mm.

If this is true Glad I bought my 116618LB in the 40mm size. Its the PERFECT size right now even with the fat lugs. So comfy for me and perfectly sits on my wrist.

Early Submariners were 37.5mm, when they went to 40mm, the old geezers probably said “it’s the end of an era” and “those new 40mm watches look ridiculous” ................ “I’ll never own one of those stupid things” !

In 1935 the 2533 was 47mm ............ just saying

Actually, it starts at 37mm (Yachtmaster).

In watch terms, 1mm is a bigger difference than you might think. Everything is accentuated when you’re dealing with such a small object.

If the lug-to-lug dimensions are pushed by 1mm also it would make the already fat and bulky 6 digit sub even harder to wear. With the end link overhand the existing Sub is 52mm end to end.

Compare the current ceramic to a pre-ceramic. There’s a relatively small difference in the dimensions (1 to 2mm) but they are greatly different to wear.

I hope so because I picked a 114060 up two weeks ago so must be one of the last ever registered 40mm subs! I’m not going to sell but even so very cool.

There should always be a Stark in Winterfell.

The Sub should always be 40mm.

Omega wouldn’t dare change the Speedie Moonwatch. Variations of it yeah but not the original.

They bumped their dive watch up 1 mm 2 years ago and it is selling like hot cakes. Rolex noticed.

A fair observation. The blue dial 300m in particular is a good looker. The blue POs are also lovely (and would be on my wrist if they had a slimmed 42mm version).

They’ll call it the Sub 41, but when the incomings start happening and the calipers come out, we will discover it’s actually a 39
