Which Speedmaster to get?

Hey all,

Just looking at getting my first Speedmaster but a couple of different movements have popped up, just wondering what you guys recommend?

Looking at a heslalite 1861

Or the 321 movement

Or perhaps waiting for the Snoopy in October?

Cheers

Do you want to spend 3K or 14K?

If budget wasn't an issue, which would be closer to the original?

I mean the 321 has Sapphire crystal front and back but the 1861 has the heslalite

Hesitate. Sapphire is banned in space because if it shattered the shards could wreak havoc inside electronic instruments.

Why does the Speedmaster Racing get no love? If I were in the market for a new Speedy, it would definitely be on my shortlist:

The Speedmaster with Caliber 321 is pretty cool. I say if you think you would enjoy it, then go for it! I would

If you plan to use it for its intended function, the white dial version is considerably more practical.

Actually, the greatest concern is to the astronauts' eyes, mouths and nasal tissues.

Hesalite all day long
IMHO the first (and one of the greatest) watches in any collection. Wears great, with a timeless design

Get the Hesalite 1861 before it's gone. Won't be long now...and then the cost of the updated model will make you want to

I too am a firm believer that hesalite belongs on a Speedy, but.....I would bend for the 321!

As you mentioned, you want something close to the Speedmasters of the early years and this really is as close as you are going to get without going vintage.

Other than the hesalite, you have a piece close to the original size, vintage design aesthetic and the iconic 321 movement. As a bonus, you can actually appreciate the 321 through the sapphire case back.

With a hesalite crystal swap it would be a no brainer. Otherwise, you can’t go wrong with the Snoopy!

Hesalite version. 321 is not worth the premium IMO.

Hesalite first. Any other models after that.

If you get a hesalite from AD you might be able to obtain the new Snoopy a bit easier

I have owned a lot of them and have settled on the Speedmaster Racing with the black and orange dial.

There’s obviously a big difference between the 3 you’ve listed. The Hesalite Pro Moonwatch being the most plentiful around and lots of options to go near new or grey. The 321 is a massive premium over the standard moonwatch and who knows when you’d be able to get one, they’re just getting to customers now. I’d imagine a big demand for the Snoopy too if it’s pretty enough given what we know about the 2013 silver snoopy.

I’d go for the 1861 hesalite and see how you like it, then consider your other options.
