Buying from a user here

Hi all,

I found a 16710 being sold on this forum by a member (with only 20 posts). I checked 2 of his references and they checked out (but who knows if they're real?). I asked the seller to accept Paypal but he will only take Zelle or bank wire. I also asked for a 3-day window to inspect the watch to validate authenticity but he denied. What is everybody's thoughts on this? Would love to hear ways to make this transaction more legit.

I have no skin in the game here but...

...it's a two way street. What has OP done that automatically makes him trustworthy. His own post count is low and is asking to be lent an expensive watch for 3 days with a full refund.

LOL , those are restrictions? What if they are protection for the seller? How is he supposed to know buyer is legit? Do you want someone buying your Rolex opening it up or changing their mind and send it back to you? How about committing Paypal fraud saying they never received it? Best way is for buyer to do his own due diligence including calling the seller and having a conversation. We have internet and google now folks, its not that hard.

No hard rules.. in there.. Not many sellers will do Paypal with new users. Also, trusted sellers will let you have a luxury watch for 3 days free? Didn't know that!

OP, you don't even have 20 posts, hope that someone will send you a watch that you might decide to return after 3 days while wiring the funds with Paypal. On the other hand, the seller has two references despite his 20 posts. Take a step back and think about who really has a suspicious profile.

What you want? Just buy from an AD or a top trusted seller. Even they will have same rules but at least you will have peace of mind and no need to authenticate the validity of the watch!

Hence there are 'trusted' sellers. You can buy from one of these.. they have best reputation: https://www.rolexforums.com/forumdisplay.php?f=52. It doesn't mean the seller you are trying to purchase is not trustworthy.


If I want to reply as seller, it'll be as:

My biggest worry is sending $10k watch and buyer claiming he never received or received a fake watch!

It is a legitimate concern, after all, all you see are pictures that could be from anywhere.

You need to be comfortable with the deal just as much as the seller. If you are not, do a bit of research on prominent sellers and go with one of them.

Seems obvious. This isn’t a Richard Mille, it’s a 16710, of which there are tons and tons and tons out there. Go with a TRF boutique and sleep well after the transaction

I totally understand where you are coming from. I recently bought a new blro from someone who was active for about 3 years and had a decent reference history, but I was still really concerned about wiring money at first. At the end of the day, if you aren't buying from a "trusted seller" it's because you are probably trying to save some money. The trusted sellers cost a bit more because they know that their premium price comes with security.

It's up to you to gauge whether the amount you're saving is worth the piece of mind. If I were you, I'd find someone else with a decent history but maybe more reasonable prices. It may not be as good of a deal as you're getting from your particular seller but it's probably worth it. In my case, I wouldn't have bought from someone with that little history unless I was meeting the person face to face for the transaction.

I also agree with the other commenters here that what you're asking for is a bit unreasonable as well. If you want to have everything your way, you should expect to pay more. Go-to a brick and mortar jewelry store and they should be able to accommodate your requests.

Its sound like a very short time IF that means it must be returned in sellers hand by three days from when you recieve it. At least for me seven days sounds fair.

GEOR, if you are still out there, you really need to get waaaay more educated before doing a major large monies transaction. I am NOT being sarcastic, just passing along what little I have learned and trying to help you not get ripped off.

I've only been here long enough to know that I would still be uncomfortable except buying from brick-and-mortar long-term sellers such as DAVIDSW or Takuya (which I have done.) Wiring money to THEM is SAFE.

I don't wire money to, or PayPal, anyone else. Even a so-called "trusted seller." I hate risk, and there have been issues where some trusted sellers were hacked.

Other than buying from an AD or boutique there only a handful of grey's I would deal with, all of whom are TRF trusted. No amount or discount can sway me. Period.

Three days - that's the standard. Three days is longer than my AD gives you to return a watch. Why three days - it gives you plenty of time to check out the watch. You should have received many fine photos of the watch before a purchase which should place you at ease about any potential purchase. If you don't, start shopping with another seller.

Many buyers are flippers, yes flippers or "faux dealers" believe-it-or-not. It's not unheard of for a buyer to purchase a watch here on the forum and then flip it to a potential buyer trying to make a quick buck. When this occurs, it is not unheard of for the "flippers" buyer to renege on a purchase leaving the "flipper" holding a watch he doesn't want or need. Next, and you guessed it, he's on the phone with the initial seller trying to return it a week or two later after he is unable to flip it. This was very common for several years.

Regarding your concerns about not accepting Paypal, most sellers do not take Paypal anymore. There are way too many Paypal scams out there directed at both buyers and sellers. For me, Paypal is synonymous with "bad news."
