In Search of the Pam 98

I will be honest and say that I don't like the majority of the Panerai due to the crown guard. But the Radiomars are a different story. The first time I saw a Pam 98, I thought that was a beautiful watch. I actually had an opportunity to get one new from an AD when it was price in the $7k range, but passed on it.

Since the Pam 98 ran for 6 years, but only 3000 made, should I expect that they will be price roughly the same? With that said, what is the market price for a Pam 98 these days?

I saw one over at TimeZone for $7480 from BigB, but I don't visit that site enough to know if he is a trusted seller. I think he also owns the site Watches24Seven.

What are your opinions?

BigB is very legit... Lucky you the 98 has not "taken off" yet that is. It is a gorgeous PAM - very unique. It is an eye catcher... Our good friend Launch Mini on here even says it's his favorite PAM - that is saying a lot coming from him because he definitely knows Panerai.

I would get it. BigB is very well spoken for. He has received countless good referrals on the other site. I have bought straps from him (his wife Donna) and the strapmaker Kevin. Dirk uses him.

BigB is a serious collector - I would say thumbs up - talk to him - maybe in these interesting times there is a discount to be had or a strap or two... Who knows...

If it speaks to you - grab it. We would all love to have another brother in the PAM world...

Maybe Launch has pics... Niels74 may have a 98 - Can't remember...

I look forward to getting a Rad also!!

By the way - I said it has not taken off yet because one never knows. I have a feeling (This is just me and I don't know a whole lot....) the 98 could be something someday... More than likely you won't want to sell it but, at least you don't have to buy a watch you love with those horrible premiums....!

When I met Launch Mini, the Pam 98 was one of the ones he showed me. I took some pictures of it and it has always intrigued me.

My thing is that I am a very much a one watch person. That was one of the reasons why I passed it up the first time around even though the AD offered 2 additional straps.

I am hoping that the current market may provide some good deals.

That is quite possible. Oscar on here scored a really good deal on an 88...

Good Luck!

Yes i do have one also, and the price asked for it seems pretty much in line with the current market, it is indeed a very eye catching watch, the double crown indeed being one of the trade marks , what you only see on the 184 & 242 as well, it indeed has not taken off, perhaps as it’s a 42MM Rad , what as the 40mm Lum’s might be under valued. As indeed there are only 3000 around

The Girard Perregaux 59 (base Jaquet 5900) is just a very nice piece of work also, this with the alarm function makes it imho a very unique piece, The dial is “busy” for a Pam , however it still looks very balanced and its also one of the models that has the full seconds hand, the 184 & 242 have sub dials. As well as the 98 is the only GMT showing the 2nd time zone the way is does.

The do come up for sale now and then , but due to the limited numbers not overly often, and as you see 24-7 already got some good references right here, so this might be your change to come over to the dark side as many here refer to. As per below 2 picks of the 98.

Here's a photo that I took of Launch Mini's Pam 98. It's something I've been thinking about for awhile.

I contacted Bruce at Watches24Seven about the Pam 98 he had for sale. I told him that I was interested in it and would like more information on it. I also asked him why his website said wire transfer only, but his eBay store accepted PayPal.

His response was that...

"I accept wire transfer on watch purchases only. I have many references.

If you are still interested I will get you the information on the PAM 98"

So I replied to him to say that I was still interested. I did mention that I found it contradictory that he would accept wire transfer only when his eBay store accepted PayPal. I even offered to pay the PayPal fee. I never did hear back from him so I'm going to presume that he isn't interested in selling to me.

Maybe I should just forget about the Pam 98 and just get the SS Daytona instead.

As he has indeed have quite a few references (I noted) don’t give up 2 fast, you might not have gotten the response you wanted, or in the time you wanted, but the 98 is a nice watch, worth pushing threw on a little, I would know very little sellers that would not want to sell (none actually ) and we don’t always know the reasons for the short answers, perhaps they are very busy etc.

Ask for some more info on the watch, and wait what you get and how the rest of the email conversation(s) will be. in the end if you don’t have a good feeling you can always cancel the deal, however knowing the Paneristi’s it would not surprise me if you will get helped correctly further, If not the loss is at there end. Another option if avail pick up the phone and give them a call, emails do not carry intonation, or personality and you might get a diff feeling about it also.

Again the 98 is a stunning piece (not to mention the Daytona is also) Good luck.
