Interesting uses for GMT

As a commodities trader I use my GMT IIc to keep track of the times in NY (my home timezone), Japan, and London at a glance. This makes my life a lot easier, especially when daylight savings rolls around. I was curious if others had uses for the GMT functions of the watch that might be interesting to the rest of us. Thanks!

I trade equities for a living and use my GMT for the exact same purpose.

compass bearing with a GMT

I have done this and its quite interesting:

A compass bearing can also be taken using the red 24 hour hand (the 24 hour hand must be set to local, standard time, not GMT). When the watch is laid flat with the 24 hour hand pointed in the direction of the sun, the 12:00 marker on the dial will point to true north (not necessarily the same as magnetic north) in the northern hemisphere. In the southern hemisphere, the watch must be oriented overhead, and looked at from below for the movement of the 24-hour hand to trace the sun's movement. When this is done, the 12:00 marker on the dial will point to true south.

I use it to keep track of others that happen to be in different TZs for comms sake. Used to use it in aviation, but no longer so rarely do I dial in GMT. It means nothing to me.
Sounds to me that you're using it the way it was meant to be used while at home base. Suspect you tweek it while on travel.

Recently during a heavy fiesta-fiesta boozing and passing out sessions on my holiday trip to goa! The GMT helped me realize whether its AM or PM!!! and also looking at the date I would realize exactly how long have I been passed out since!!!

I use the 24hr hand to track time in Asia even though I don't really need it since it's an easy conversion.

I work in CA but most of my colleagues and all of my family are on the East coast, so I have the time set to Pacific Time, but keep the bezel three hours forward to that the 24hr hand tracks Eastern Time.

I like to keep the 24 hour hand synched with the other hands and I turn the bezel to track the second time zone. This allows me to quick check a third time zone. Often London since I have an office there as well.

When travelling, I like to jump the hour hand and use the 24 hour hand to track time at home.

I could calculate the 3 hour Pacific Time/Eastern Time difference in my head and often do, but it's nice to just see it at a glance as well. Makes coordinating the conference calls a lot easier!

I was going to make "a sailor in a submarine" joke but this makes the point more tastefully.

Beside from the GMT fonction I use daily (GMT -5, GMT +1, GMT + 8).
I use it just like a Sub, to time different evens thourghout the day, knowing that Δ is 0; 6 is 15; 12 is 30; and 18 is 45.
I hope this makes sense.

I use mine to track the time in India, which is where the other half of our team is located.

My father in law used to let my son play with his gold GMTII when he was a baby - surely that's the best use for a Rolex!

same here. I track local time in Japan (+16 from PDT) and Hong Kong (+15 from PDT) as I sell and support these markets...

Makes converting PDT to local time in these timezones a snap !

I guess I'm in the minority, I only use the 24 hour hand once in awhile. Otherwise I happen to really enjoy the GMT and use it to tell time!!!

Sometimes I will parachute into the Amazon and rely on my GMT as a compass. I remember that it has to be set to local time for this function to work, so I make sure that local time is set. Then I remember this feature doesn't work the same in the Southern Hemisphere. Last time I did this it took me 3 weeks to find my way out. But I did learn 2 new langauges, so the trip was worth it.

Next trip planned for September. Wish me luck.

On the compass subject, I recall reading that if the 24 hr hand is set to GMT then pointing the 12 hr hand at the sun will result in the 24 hr hand pointing north. Is this incorrect or is it only correct if the 24 hr hand is set to local time?
