Authentic Vintage Rolex???
I'm obviously new here and I'm hoping to get advice on whether I have an authentic vintage Rolex Oyster Datejust. I hope to put up some pictures of the face and back and band, and find out if anyone here has an opinion as to authenticity. If it looks authentic on the outside, then I would take it in to a watch repair shop to have it further examined.
But I don't want to step on any toes or put my question in the wrong forum. Is this appropriate here? Thank you in advance. |

This is the right forum. Welcome. Post pics when you get a chance. Perhaps the Watch OUt! thread is the best area to post when you do get some pics up.
That said, as always, the best way to tell is to open it up and look at the movement.

Allright, bear with me on this. I've never tried to take this close up of pictures, so I'm learning. But let me give you the background.......estate sale, the little old lady swore this watch was her husbands and acquired somewhere before 1959. The face says "Rolex" "Oyster Perpetual Datejust". "Superlative Chronometer Officially Certified". On the bottem at the 6 oclock position, "Swiss Made".
Allright, now I feel like an idiot, I'm not exactly sure how to get my large pictures to post here..........let me see if I can shrink them down. |

Unless it's a ladies model, my immediate reaction is that it is a fake. Reason: engraving on the caseback.

That caseback has me a bit worried. Some of the vintage experts may be able to over-rule me, but I have never seen an authentic Rolex caseback look like that.

That's what has me worried also. I ran across an obscure reference saying pre-1945 models had engraved case backs. But that wasn't from any sort of "official" information site.

Date magnification looks off in the picture of the dial. I'm saying it's a fake. Can you get a more direct shot of the dial?

Read this link as well: http://www.qualitytyme.net/pages/rolex_or_replica.html.
It has information about case back engravings.

I also have never seen a genuine Rolex with a case back like the one in your photo. The front is also extremely rough and unfinished.
No. I don't believe it is genuine.

That would also not be a watch from pre-1945. The cyclops did not get introduced until the 1950s.

Yep. Without question it is a fake. Magnification is way off. Sorry, there isn't anything that's even close on that watch.

Looks fake to me, cheap and unfinished. Also, I'm pretty sure there's NO magnification goin' on with the cyclops.

have you taken the band off?
between the lugs at 6 and 12 o'clock there should be a case number and serial number? It is not looking good. Just noticed the O at the base of the crown on the dial is almost round, it should be more "squashed", the end pieces on the band from the back side don't look right either. |

Patrick, it doesn't matter. The watch is a fake. It's not even worth pursuing it any further. You have a 100% genuine fake.

Looks to be a bad fake.
Did you get it from a reliable source? |

Estate auction. And I bought it assuming it was a fake, so I'm not too upset. I appreciate everyone giving me their input.
