How much alcohol do you drink per day?

Since my wife has increasingly commented on my drinking habits, I wonder if I should slow down but I don't feel it is out of control and I feel great about it.

My consumption has definitely increased since covid hit in March but I would say my average week goes something like this:

Monday - 2-3 light beers
Tuesday - anywhere from 1-2 double whiskeys/ tequila some kind of liquor
Wedneday - no alcohol
thursday - half a bottle of white wine + 1-2 whiskeys
Friday - bottle of red wine with dinner spread across the night + maybe one whiskey
saturday - 2-3 beers or 1/2 bottle of white wine + whiskey
sunday- no alcohol

On average that sums up my average week over the last couple of months - 4-5 days of alcohol and 2-3 of none. Is this a problem?

About 16oz. every 36 months or so. Ultimately, it doesn't matter what any of us thinks.....your wife is the one that matters.

Lol. Alcohol is designed for one purpose. Some wives don’t mind that other wives do.

The definition of alcoholic is so subjective that even attempting to discuss it is futile.

How much one consumes is not the defining factor in alcohol misuse. The fact that your wife is commenting has far more significance than how much anyone else is drinking. For example I don’t drink at all; that doesn’t mean anyone drinking more than me is misusing. Some one else might drink more than you but if they are able to stop drinking when they say they will instead of continuing knowing it may effect their productivity the next day or they don’t have any role failures due to their drinking, and they don’t continue to drink in spite of knowing it will cause or is continuing to cause problems in their life or with their health then they may not have a misuse problem. IMO if your concerned and your wife is concerned you should get an evaluation now before it becomes a problem or goes from mild misuse to moderate or severe.

I was drinking significantly more than this during the first part of COVID-19 but have since cut way back. I'm settling into consistently being able to abstain most of the time with just ~2 cheat days a month.

As others have said it is very relative, but given your wife's comments and the fact that the trend is increasing, I would try hard to cut back for the benefit of your long-term health, blood pressure, blood sugar, wasteline, etc.

I drink only tequila. Maybe a half bottle to full bottle each week, depending on how much the gf is annoyed with me.

no too worried about the wife but it did give me an opportunity to think about it and was curious what other people's habits were.

I am not worried that I am an alcoholic or anything else along those extremes. I was just curious to hear how much other people drink. Friends tend to always exaggerate (either nothing at all/ or a lot).

Similar to you. Then I abstain 1-2 a year for 30 days.

If your wife isn’t happy you should file for divorce.

Or just take a few more days off lol that might prove easier.

Im sure you will get answers all over the place. I usually drink 2-3 days a week (mostly weekends) and would have approx 8-10 total beverages per week (mostly beer/wine with a few mixed drinks)

If that’s in the problem zone then pretty much everyone I know has a problem. You’re fine IMO.

I don’t drink during the week due to my job but I’ve been known to polish off a case of light domestic beer or a bottle of bourbon on a football tailgate weekend.

Yeah. This is why I cut down.

Plus I sleep better without it (or very little of it).

I drink a significant amount more than you but no wine or liquor, simply beer. I never take a “hangover day” or mistreat my family in any way. I simply like “my beer”, some days I will have 0-1 and some days I will have 18. Alcoholism runs in my family though so the second I “needed a beer to function” it would cease to nothing. I’ve done this before when I was younger and quit drinking for almost a year entirely because after a few I couldn’t stop.

I believe your wife probably knows you better than we do and personally if mine ever said anything about my consumption I’d quit the next day. Luckily for myself she has no problems with how I live my life.

Also a quick side note. I’ve got high blood pressure, I was tracking it and one evening after having a few more than I wanted I checked my bp. It was incredibly low for me like 106/67 which with Max dose bp meds I get right at 120/80. I told my doc and she said that certain people alcohol has the opposite effect on and it can relax them to a state their bp goes down. I’ve got a really cool doc that just shakes her head and tells me to be responsible with it, not quit or slow it down.

YMMV but listen to your wife.

None.

Is it a problem?

Yes, because you’re questioning your wife’s concerns vs “feel great”.

When I was single out picking up chicks every night I drank a lot.

When married and I later got to wine country we would drink a glass or two of wine almost every night at dinner.

Now I drink maybe 2-3 glasses of wine a week and maybe a beer after hockey.

Also I now never drink more than two glasses of anything at a time. Two is my cut off.

I never really drank much hard stuff but I did drink a lot of lacquers like Baileys and Grand Marnier.

People go through phases, and if it's an issue with your wife, cut down some. We are going through stressful times so perhaps a person really has to be careful not to lean on to many crutches.

As for the health aspects a glass or two wine a night may actually be good for you. Hard stuff possibly not so much. Alcohol thins the blood which is supposedly good for you but the liver also has to process it, which over time is not so good. Alcohol also can supposedly lead to weight gain. But probably the bigger problem is some people get addicted very easily to it.

interesting, I have heard of this the opposite affects of alcohol on bp too but never investigated it. My wife is just more aware because her dad does have an alcohol problem - so she is always concerned about my following in his footsteps even though I feel I am far away from drinking heavily.

I thought that I was drinking too much at 2 bottles of wine a week. I probably drink 1 bottle a month to 6 weeks now. Once I open the bottle I drink it all that night though.

Your consumption is quite high and the trend combined with the timing re Covid should be a concern, and that's before your wife's comments which should be cause for further concern.

No one is accusing you of being dependant on alcohol but it reads to me, a complete stranger who doesn't know you, that you are at least part way down that slippery slope. Go without alcohol for a full week which should prove to you and your wife there isn't a problem. When the week is up don't consume the amount you're currently consuming, cut down a bit. Try an alcohol free beer. Don't forget alcohol is a depressant and also ruins your sleep so I wouldn't want to be drinking 5 days per week anyway.

The other concern should be the parts I've quoted. Christmas is a natural time to fight for a lot of families, try not to make it too easy to fight over something so small. Lockdown has been hard enough already.

I was enjoying alcohol wayyy too much.
Marriage crashed and burned.
Stopped drinking Sept 24 2012.
Haven't had a drop since.
No meetings... no AA...no support structure of any kind in place, so it's weird.
Like a switch got flipped. I was like : Nope ! I'm done.

That your wife is making her observations to you is a really big sign it's time to put the bottle down.

I guarantee you won't regret it. Health, blood sugar, weight, mental acuity, your relationships, etc will all benefit. I can say this from the clear hindsight I now have.

29 years old and I drink maaaybe a glass of wine every 2 weeks? I've never been an alcohol man myself. Then again, my father died due to his liver shutting down due to years of drinking a case of beer a day, so I have always sort of been careful about drinking.

Stopped drinking entirely little over a year ago. Not for any specific reason, but just because it seemed like it was time. Wasn't drinking that much. If I drank at all, just a beer or two a night, but I haven't missed it. Take that back, sometimes when I'm eating a particular food that pairs great with beer, I'm tempted, but it's not in the house anymore, so no big deal.

Tell you what, though, I do sleep better now.
