Interesting poll

I decided to post a poll. I have never posted a poll before so please bear with me.

Cyclops? Love it or leave it?

Also, did any watch manufacturer have a cyclops-like magnification before Rolex?

its better than any other alternative since the numbers on most date wheels are too small to be easily read (for me, anyway). But for me its not aesthetically up to the standard of the rest of a Rolex.

Well I made it a 3 day poll. Interesting to see how it works out with the ups and downs on both poll choices.

I wonder if, as we age, where one we would have been anti-cyclops if we maybe become more pro-cyclops re: eyesight.

Anyway, pretty sure this poll has been done before, just thought it would be fun and illuminating to post it again. :)

Love you all. And Merry Christmas to all!

I like them, Rolex has been using them on various models for decades and it's great for those of us who can't always remember what the date it is.

I like the typical Rolex signatures like cyclops and fluted bezels

No middle ground? I like it, but would also be ok with a legible date without a cyclops.

Love the DSSDs without .
Love the 16613 and 16613LB with .
Prefer Sub 124060 over 116610LN without .
Daytona without.
Expl II 42s with .

There is no clear answer.

Cyclop is the great way to achieve the dial symmetry. The enlarged date window in most cases ideally balances the 9 mark. Otherwise you see the date which is closer to the center of the dial than the 9 mark which is esthetically not as good. E.g. SD4000 vs SD43

I agree. Both. Can look fire but those without also look good. Win win if you ask me.

I would rather NOT have it. It is convenient for tired old eyes(like mine), But I think the dial would be better off with out it. I have a 36 mm Tudor glamour with a black dial (like my 126200 DJ) and of course it is absent the magnifier. I like it much better that way.

I'm glad there is not one on the DSSD but I do want an SD43 and part of the reason is the cyclops. That would be win win for me

Because of dial symmetry, I've always preferred "Tropic" (without magnification) over "Cyclops" crystals.
Luckily, for vintage models; Rolex has some Tropic/cyclopes 'equivalent'. For example, the GMT 1675, 1655, and 16750 have Cyclops 116 and the Tropic 38.

I used to hate it, then, despite myself, I picked up a 16750. Now I love it and don't really wear my Exp because it lacks one. A game of two halves, Saint.

The cyclops is a hideous boil. But I’m used to my opinions being in the minority .

LOL. That's en entirely fair opinion. I just wanted to see the lovers/haters out there. So far it seems there are a lot more lovers vs hater. This surprised me.

No matter what, wear ur Rollie in good health. :P

+100.

As much as it may be a "visual trademark" it's a pretty crude way to magnify the date (badly I might add since most of the time it reflects so much you can't even read it). I already brushed my GMT-LN's PCLs so maybe I'll take the next step and give the cyclops a quick smack with a chisel, since it's just glued on!

Where I work, I look at the date on mine several times a day. When I self-criticize that I don’t pay attention to the date, I think, ‘well, at least you know what day it is!’

I think Rolex pretty much has it right as to which references use it and which don’t.

Love it on the ones that have it.

It looks good on some models and ugly on others. Pretty much always looks off on 36mm models, monopolizes too much of the dial. Also looks bad on a black dial, in my opinion (sorry for you submariner date owners).

Looks good on white, silver, and green dialed watches. Reminds me of a small drop of rain sitting like dew on grass on a green Rolex, very lovely. Blends in nicely on white and silver dials.

My favorite Rolex models remain the non-date offerings. Classic sub, Daytona, Exp 1, OP.

People whine about it, but the date is exceptionally useful and functional. I don't consider the what it looks like aspect, because I buy and use my watches for their function. Cyclops makes it more functional and even more so for older folks, and its not debatable.

Not going to say its a great looking feature, but I really miss it on the watches I own with a date function and no cyclops or magnification of any kind.
