If an AD accepts a deposit, does that guarantee you the watch?
Put money down on an Explorer I at a large AD. Wondering if they're accepting deposits, does that mean that Rolex isn't discontinuing the watch for 2021?
Another question - what if there's a new model in 2021 before my order is fulfilled. Does that mean they're supposed to sell me the updated model instead? Probably questions I can ask the SA directly but figured I'd pose the question here and listen to everyone's experiences. TIA |

You know that nothing is guaranteed in this world, except for death and taxes, right?

AD’s are neither owned or controlled by Rolex SA. They are simple authorised dealers of Rolex and are otherwise separate companies.

Depends how much you trust your AD. My AD takes deposits, but has never let me down. They are one of the larger ones in my area. By no means am I a big spender/VIP, but every time I've wanted a watch and put a deposit down, I got what I wanted.

No guarantee Worse case scenario, the AD closes and keeps your deposit (I’ve heard of that happening) Best case... You either get the watch, or some upgraded version of it |

Waiting for a year now while AD is holding a sizable deposit.
I will feel better when I receive the call, who can know exactly what impact the pandemic will have on the boutique?

I would assume a deposit means it’s guaranteed.
I’ve never put a dep on a Rolex before though so not sure if they are an exception. Overall though a deposit should be locking something in. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk |

The answers to your questions will depend on the AD. An AD that takes a deposit should be placing an order for the watch with Rolex. However, that does not mean that Rolex will deliver that watch to the AD. The AD in most cases will not have an ETA on when that watch will be delivered either. This is why an AD can’t give you a timeline. Should that watch be discontinued, it is up to the AD to put you on the list for the replacement model or refund your deposit. Should Rolex raise the price of that watch prior to the AD receiving it from Rolex, it is up to the AD to decide what price to charge you. In most cases they will charge you the higher price.

I think a deposit ranks under even unsecured creditors if they go into liquidation.

The answer is simple: ask them. It's your money, you should know if you're spending it on a watch or a wish.

Rolex offers the AD no guarantee of specific watches, no advance notice of discontinuations, no intell about model updates or new releases. They also don't ask the AD for deposits because that would be unreasonable and just a pure money grab.
If deposits is the game your AD plays you have to decide if you want to play...but no they can't guarantee anything because they don't control it. Sent from my SM-T830 using Tapatalk |

If an AD accepts a deposit, does that guarantee you the watch?
What paperwork did you receive in exchange for your deposit?
For example, was it recorded on a sales order, and did they give you a copy? If so, and it included a description of the model and price, then that is your conditional sales contract. Your price should be fixed (or might not be listed on it). Somewhere in the fine print would be the terms for cancellation by either party. If not, then you’ll be one more guy on a waiting list with money on the line. That’s your ante in the game. It’s a double-blind game of trust - they trust you’ll pay the balance if the watch comes in; you trust they’ll get one before prices rise or model is discontinued. Your AD has no idea if a model will be discontinued just like the rest of us

No guarantee.
You will get your watch when it comes in. If that model discontinue, you have the choice to transfer to new model at new price or get your money back. If that AD go bankrupt, you might lose your deposit.

I do not play the deposit game. Too many chances for problems, disagreement and disappointment. My AD does not require a deposit from established customers as the watches can be sold immediately to someone else. Now I would prepay if we had a shipping date and the money was completely refundable. Don't fall into this AD game. Look at our Trusted Sellers and find the watch you want and negotiate your best price and pay. You will have the watch the next working day and can start the ownership experience without the games. If it costs a little more, so what. Time is also money. Why sit around without the watch you want and can pay for to save a little. As we are reminded, life is short. Step up.

No guarantees. I’ve put deposits down and paid in full for certain pieces at my AD. He has come through everytime.

Nothing is guaranteed. I’ve put down a full deposit with my AD before. AD came through. Your mileage may vary.

I've seen two Rolex AD's here in Seattle in the last year lose their status as a Rolex AD. They didn't close up shop mind you, they just don't sell Rolex anymore. They sell Tag Heuer and Hamilton. So I think in that case you'd be able to get that deposit back.
But if they close doors completely ? You're hosed and you very likely have lost that deposit. Trying to get that $ back would be just a monumental pain in the arse. In the OP you mentioned the AD was large. That could mean they are large enough to survive the carnage of retail shops in 2020. But who even knows what their books look like this year. All bets are off. |

My luck with leaving deposits is that it has paid off well. It took about four months and that left me worrying a bit. A year seems like a long time to wait. I'd be checking in to make certain they haven't gone to Mexica with the funds.

Depends on the dealer. Who brought up the idea of a deposit? How much was it? If WEMPE, Tourneau, or WOS brought up the subject, the watch will be yours. If you brought it up and it’s not one of the Big 3, who knows. What does it say on your invoice?

Depends. There are some stories on here of guys waiting on the 116610LV and when that was discontinued, they weren't guaranteed the 126610LV and some were refunded since a new model started a new list. Others had it rolled to the new model, but they were not guaranteed their original spot on the "list."
I am not the biggest fan of dropping thousands of dollars for a deposit on a watch that is not even mine or guaranteed to be mine. I would rather register interest and wait. |

It can vary hugely.
Best thing to do is ask for clarity from your AD as it seems like none of this was established before handing the deposit over

I did this once with Watches of Switzerland (Wynn casino AD). 50% down as a new customer and was quoted one month. Watch arrived on time and I collected. 216570
