Rolex Skydweller Black - different blacks?

For those that have the Skydweller in black dial - I’ve seen some blacks that almost look grey, and others that look dark black, similar to the black dials on a sub or GMT II.

Do you guys know if Rolex has kept the same black for all Skydweller dials over the years, or has the black changed? Trying to figure out if it’s that or if it’s just lighting.

It’s the same color. The sunburst dial gives off that effect.

I believe that the dials have remained the same color from the start.
What you’re seeing is different shades, due to lighting. The black dials installed in the Sky Dwellers are not a “flat” black, but have a kind of sunburst effect. Albeit, not as easily identified in photographs.

I think it’s just the lighting... Mine looks completely black or grey depending on the amount of light and angle. Curiously it doesn’t happen with any other of my black dial Rolex...

Umm idk. I have a black dial and mine never looks like the one in the first picture above. Maybe different dial color over the years and also differences between SS and Pm.

Yeah, I should’ve clarified. The SS has different black dial from the older PM variants.

Is this marketed as a black dial or slate dial?

I saw the PM has a slate dial white the SS has a “bright black” dial

The sunburst gives it many variations depending on the lighting. It’s quite a dynamic dial.

Would you guys/gals mind sharing the year of your watch?

Curious if this was only on the previous years, or on the 2020 as well.

I actually think it was black - I bought it almost exactly 5 years ago...

It only looks slate in direct sunlight or under strong lighting.

Now I’m curious too, later on I’ll check the invoice, box and papers for some clue.

Thanks, I appreciate it! That dial looks really amazing. I’m really liking the black dial now if that’s what the “bright black” looks like for the SS black dial version. I hope they didn’t move that slate dial only to the everose gold version.

Here’s the slate: https://www.rolex.com/watches/sky-dw...6935-0007.html

My pleasure!

Although, at a closer look I’m pretty sure that my dial is none of the above.

Since they discontinued my white gold reference after the introduction of the SS version I believe that the dial was gone with it, because it’s not really a sunburst.

Stay safe and Happy holidays!

The WG SkyD black face is slate gray under bright light. I’m not sure the newer black SS SkyD can get to this same color under lights.

The SS Sky Dweller dial can be a lot of shades of black, sometimes dark grey. When the light hits it just right and the full sunburst kicks in it looks wonderful. It still catches me out at times because the dial can look so flat black/grey that I forget how much it can twinkle and shimmer.

Rolex are good at this kind of thing.

When I was ready for a black dial Rolex in my collection the Sky Dweller was already in pole position. After the sheer cleverness and elegance of the design, the dial was a part of the appeal. To simply call it black really doesn't start to do it justice.

Dial is really more of dark charcoal sunburst than straight up black. I prefer that dial to the white or blue. It's a stunner.
