Watches for specific occasions

I am interested to find out if you guys buy specific watches for specific occasions, for example a "work watch" or a "special occasions" watch which may be a little more eye catching? I enjoy hearing different peoples opinions and views.

I tend to wear my watches daily on rotation rather than specific watches for specific reasons. In the days before lockdowns, I made a point of wearing my Seamaster when taking my son swimming. I joke to my wife I wear my Rolex when I want to be irresistible to beautiful women but she seems to have missed the memo!

Look in the real world all watches have one function only to tell time on the wrist on whatever occasion its owner chooses.

Since my boss is on the other side of the Atlantic I wear my GMT during the week to track his time zone, and then my sub on the weekend to mix it up. Definitely more a practical consideration than anything else. If (when) I get my hands on an explorer then the sub will have competition for the weekend watch!

I bought my Breguet for my daughter's wedding (really it was just an excuse to buy a pure dress watch even though i didn't really need it).

Yeah I guess many people will do the same thing, however I have heard people say they will not wear specific watches to work as they don't want to give out the wrong message to other employees. I like your humour about the Rolex, I'll keep that in mind to say to my other half

I’m not a big time collector, so I tend to buy watches for a purpose rather than an occasion.

I own a GMT which I find useful for travel and work alike. I also own a couple of divers because they not on,YG tell time, but they have a useful timing bezel. Last, I have a time only watch ... to tell the time

I don’t typically, but then I’m not someone that cares too much about dress code or protocol. However, i am on the hunt for a nice watch that i can wear when travelling to countries where the wearing of a am easily-recognisable premium watch would make me a target.

Might have to screenshot this. It's a running joke with my boss and I that I need a GMT to track his time zone, my time zone and the time zone of my team... only I think I should be able to put it on expenses!

100% based on how I'm dressed and what I'm going to be doing...it's really that simple. No different than deciding what shoes to wear.

So yes I suppose. In a suit for a wedding?...black strap medium size white dial watch, on/in/near water?...dive watch, most anything else?...Speedmaster or Explorer 39mm.

I'm taking a wild guess...watch theft, but you seem like you have a point to make by not knowing. Watch theft is a real thing some places, maybe not enough reason to worry about but there are places I'd likely wear a Speedmaster or Grand Seiko over a Sub/GMT with a cyclops. Not a big political statement on my part, just a choice.

But again, I'm sure others like to take a different stance...to each his/her/their own.

Yes, but COVID-19 has really changed things for me. I’ve been working from home since last March. Not sure when and if we’re ever going back in, and because of this, all I ever wear are my Submariner and Speedmaster.

I like a watch to be multi-faceted. Maybe this is why the GMT & Submariner are my favorite references amongst others in the Rolex family.

Now if I was sitting on piles of cash...that may not be the case.

I like watches that go well with a certain attire but are also versatile. For instance, my DJ 41 and YM are my go-to business watches, but can be worn more casually. My Moser Pioneer looks good on the weekend with a polo or with rolled up sleeves, but I can definitely wear it with a suit. The one caveat is I do like having a watch I reserve as a "beater," which for me is my Tudor BB 58.

I prefer sporty / casual watches and I tend to use them also for formal occasions.
Several collectors are of the opinion that you need to own a proper dress watch, that should be with leather strap, small diameter & thin case, clean dial without date or complications and possibly precious metal, while to my taste a DJ 41 silver or rhodium dial, fluted bezel and Jubilee bracelet is already a perfect dress watch.
Someone else considers uncouth to wear a Sub, or a GMT or a Daytona with suit & tie while working, and to me they are perfectly fine.
My opinion is that the etiquette is the individual common sense and not the rules of someone else.

I agree. Hard to justify buying a pure dress watch nowadays. My company went casual 15 years ago, so we never wear suits to work anymore. A sub and Speedmaster work great. So will just about any sports watch. I only wear a suit to weddings and funerals, and it's been years since I have been to one or the other.

We go to nice restaurants all the time, but again, no suit. Just a sports coat, nice shirt, and nice slacks. Submariner or Speedmaster are perfectly fine.

Sure, why not
I have a Rolex daily wearer(MK II, 116660) that is fairly knocked around and another of the same reference that's kept as something special(D-blue) to wear when I feel the occassion, like my wedding day.
Then there's a watch I have to wear when I'm riding one of my motorcycles that's fit for purpose for wearing under the sleeve of a leather jacket on a leather strap(early Co-axial Railmaster).
Another for rather casual wear on a Silver Snoopy fabric strap(Hesalite Speedy Pro).
Also a GS, on a fine gloss black leather strap which is a dedicated dress watch for much more formal occassions(sbgw-253).
There's also a Seiko SKX somewhere around here that I seem to have lost, that I use for inspiration to get my house reno finished so I can pack everything up which is here where I'm currently living and move out so I can get to the full reno here
That way I'll find it and have a Michael Young mod done to it as a custom to make it look like a 5517
Then there's the planned commissioning of a bespoke solid gold watch which is for my retirement gift from my wife when we get everything done in preparation for retirement. If it ever really happens The horological novelty factor will be off the scale for me on that one

When I was a working police officer, I wore my Rolex to work. I didn't wear it AT work. It was in the general orders that the department would only cover a damaged/broken watch to $50. So that was the most expensive watch I'd wear while on patrol.

Most of my watches can be worn for multiple occasions but I do have strictly dress watch for formal occasions.

I do like having a few pieces in the collection that I love to wear for special occasions. That doesnt mean I don’t wear them regularly but it makes me appreciate them so much more in those particular moments

I don’t know what to make of that comment, but it certainly is not correct. Yes, a basic function of a watch is to tell time, but in the very real world of the multi billion dollar, global watch industry, the tens of thousands of weekly posts to this and numerous horology related websites, watch shows and magazines clearly it is not the only function

Yes and not limited to that but many factors come into play e.g: budget, investment value, functionality, versatility, dress code matching, working environment, harshness of environment (explorer/subs), hue and complexion, comfort, heirloom piece, grail piece, accuracy, size and specs to be considered

I don’t buy watches to fit specific categories. But I use what’s in my collection to match the activity.

Edit: But I am looking for specific occasions to justify the addition of a minute repeater :)
