GMT IIC vs Yachtmaster
Hi All- Would appreciate some advice on a tough decision!!
I was on the hunt for a SS YM or GMTIIc to celebrate a milestone event. AD didn't have either in stock but was lucky to get a GMT 116710LN unworn 2020 warranty from a trusted seller (seems Rolex released a small number in 2020, although discontinued in 2019). I find myself staring at the green GMT hand more often than I thought I would :-) I did all the research on YM/GMT on the Internet...and I think I lucked out when the watch landed! AD now called, saying that he might be able to source a Blue dial YM in a month's time. I have never held one in my hand (the other Rolex I currently own is an Explorer 1 39mm, which was my daily beater for 7 years, before the GMT II arrived). So, my questions: 1. How different does the SS YM wear compared to Ex-1 or GMTII? I have somewhat slim wrists (pic attached) but find both watches comfortable so far. 2. Those who have experience in wearing more than 1 watch in rotation, do you see a situation where one could rotate between the GMTII and SS YM... say, someplace you felt that the YM was better suited than the GMTII? I know Ex-1 is the king- goes with anything I don't want my watches to be safe queens and I don't trade/resell. This is not a question about which one to let go, but whether all three watches can see "active service" if I get the YM. Thank you in advance for your time and suggestions! |

The YM will wear better in your wrist vs the GMTc as the lugs are curved. Think you will love it!

The GMT is crazy awesome.
The Yachtmaster is more under the radar awesome.

I recently posted about my experience with YM40 and other references. To me, the YM is much more comfortable than the GMT IIc/SubC or even my 5 digits.

I am probably in the minority, but I just can not wear the Oysterflex bracelet. I mean no offense to those of you that like it, but I would have to pick the Oyster and the GMT.

I own a BLNR oyster, a YM40 and the Exp1. The YM40 wears closer to the Exp1, but it doesn’t disappear on the wrist like the Exp 1 seems to do. I think the YM40 is the perfect office watch and certainly complements what you have quite well though. It’s sporty but classy and can be “dressed up” better than the sharp angles and ceramic bezel of the GMTIIc.

The YM wears slightly smaller than the gmt. The blue dial is stunning and you can absolutely rotate them with ease.

Like others, I think the YM wears well, with the curved lugs. And the blue dial is very nice, especially since your other two watches have black dials. I would add it if you can.

Value retention GMT
Comfort Yachtmaster As a one and only I would say GMT master but if your collection consists of more than 1, then the latter.

I have the LN also and lusted over the rhodium YM having tried it on a few times.
I can say that it wears noticeably smaller than the GMT. It should be a better fit on your wrist than the Gmt imo |

I have YM40 blue and had it on a rubber strap but to ge honest as good as it looks it dresses it down
Back on a bracelet now and good for work clothes or dressed up I rotate it with a James Camerson I like how altho both SS the difference looks work for me dressed up / casual polished centre links / classic brush professional I am too drawn to blue, but your blue vs black should make the difference in the watches both subtle and obvious at the same time |

I just picked up the Rhodium/Slate version of the YM. It wasn’t on my radar until I saw it in person. It is easily the most comfortable watch I own and it doesn’t wear as flashy as pictures will have you believe. I currently have a 5 digit Bluesy and a SubC 6 digit. I’m considering a BLNR for my next and last piece, but not convinced I want a GMT at the moment.
I’ve some great shots of the YM with RubberB/Everest bands that make it much more of a fun and casual piece if you choose to go in that direction... |

I own both the YM 40 (rhodium) and GMTII. YM is by far the most comfortable watch I have worn. It is also beautiful and understated.
I also love the GMT (chnr), great for travel, and wears larger on the wrist. You need both if that is possible! |

The YM is super comfy and a metal bezel is a good complement to a ceramic one. Horus_2.jpg

The YM wears a little more streamlined and dressier.
It would make a nice pair. That GMT looks great on you! |

Agree. I think the YM and the Exp 1 wear similarly on the wrist. I think you could very easily rotate between them for very different looks.

Nice Land/Air/Sea combo if you ask me. I've often considered the YM40 blue dial, but never pulled the trigger because i was hesitant about the platinum bezel's longevity. Still look at it fondly though, its a beautiful watch. It would be your dressiest piece, despite also being a sport watch, and i think it would get plenty of wear given the blue dial. Although i dont own one, its a stunner and remains on my "maybe on day" list.

Thank you everyone for the wonderful feedback and comments. I liked the thought of the land/air/sea combo collection.. didn't quite see it that way, but that makes a lot of sense. I am REALLY inclined towards the YM now!
Great pictures too @HogwldFLTR @alphadweller @JSol1 and @fskywalker! Btw, anyone tried a leather strap (dark navy alligator) with the YM 40 Blue? Loved the rubber straps as well, but I am thinking if something "dressy" will work better for a semi-dressy YM, and yet without too much bling. Any experience with ADs - for a list price YM purchase, are they amenable to throw in a nice leather strap and swap the PCL bracelet right there? I am scared stiff to ruin the polished lugs with scratches on a DIY effort at home later if I get the YM. As a constant rotator with the GMT, the PCL will not last long I think. |

Buy the watch you like and wear it when you like. That’s it.

Since the YM is becoming a bit harder to get these days at MSRP I’m not sure anyone will be eager to discount or throw anything in...good luck! |

The YM case is like the DJ, Daytona and the GMT is more like the Sub. The YM is comfortable but wears noticeably smaller than the GMT. I have the GMT and tried on the YM many times. Now, I’m not knocking the YM... my biggest challenge is choosing between the Slate and Blue, this has kept me from pulling the trigger.
Yes, both can exist in a collection and are great for rotation. I say go for the YM! |

@fskywalker You have some CRAZY great photos.. please share as many as you can. These are the most spectacular photos of the YM in this forum :-) The subdued tan colored leather helps the vibrant blue to pop out so much - didn't think it would work so well had I not seen this here!
Maybe few more pics and even the good folks like @Wcdhtwn will convert ;-) |
