Α deal i couldn't pass up

Or else how a Friday can get even better!

From the first time I saw it, I fell in love with it.

This is nothing strange for a watch lover.

We often fall in love.

Lately, I like vintage watches but I don't want to get involved in vintage markets and I prefer new watches that look just like vintage.

The AVI Ref. 765 1953 Re-Edition is such a case and if I'm not mistaken the only case where the original is 1 to 1 with the re-edition.

So I couldn't resist a unique opportunity to buy it.

Without further ado, I present my new acquisition.

I like that watch a lot. Most Breitling's have much too busy a dial for me. This one is just right.

Congrats, Panos! I'm glad to see they gave you the hat as well. Is the cleaning cloth now a part of the packaging or was this also a perk for purchasing the piece?

It very nice! Nothing beats a Breitling Chronograph and this one has a classic design.

Congrats...this is exactly what I was going to say.

I own one Breitling and it was also love at first sight. I was at a port of call on a cruise walking store to store, no intention of buying a watch on that trip, when I saw it. I don't think I have ever made a high dollar purchase (for my budget) on the spot with no further knowledge or research, very out of character for me - Breitling must bring it out in people.

Congrats Panos !!! One of the best watches on the market in any price range !!Is one of the paradoxes of the watch community this model to be still available and at the same time to see some other watches with waiting lists and prices over retail !!! This is a real gem !

Beautiful detail but i don't think if it's practical when you are wearing it because of the sweat.

I asked if they have a cleaning cloth to clean the shining bezel while i was examing the watch and they gave me this cleaning cloth. Which after the purchase found its way to the shopping bag

Congratulations. One of my favorite watches and mine get's a lot of wrist time. I like the OEM strap but have played around and put a OEM mesh on the watch and the Forstner Klip bracelet for a cool retro look. Enjoy.

Thank you my friend, Dan

She’s great looking indeed! “Lucy” is her nickname!

The bezel is rotating both ways and locking with a clicking sound in every hour.

It is secured to the case with 3 ultra tiny screws in 2,6 and 10 o’clock.

I hope it snows

Well, Lucy is a beauty! The 12 hour rotating bezel also makes Lucy amazingly versatile.

You have a good eye for unique attractive timepieces, my friend!

Thank you, my friend, Dan for the good words but we must admit that since George Kern (Breitling's new CEO) took in his team Fred Mandelbaum aka @watchfred, an avid vintage collector as a consultant, Breitling is hitting home runs !!!

congratulations!

yes, the Re-Edition is as close to the vintage original as technically possible - case dimensions are absolutely precise, as is the reproduction of dial, hands or crystal, the lume replicates the tone & texture of the Radium originally used in the 1950s, it is hand applied, just as it was then.

the only difference that is externally visible are the slightly longer pushers, the B09 caliber requires ca. 0.7mm more "travel" to activate the chronograph functions.

here are some vintage "Lucy" from April 1953 to late 1961

as you may hear from other watch collectors that your Breitling looks "just like a Breguet TypeXX", here's the timeline (and the reason why this Copilot got the Lucy nickname, it was years ahead, defining a design many others copied).

1953: mass production of the ref. 765AVI "Lucy" begins in April, both analog and digital minute counter versions are launched. "PreGeneve" for the April batch, "Geneve"-branded for the November 1953 and later batches, as Breitling only moved to Geneva in summer 1953

1954: Breguet (and Vixa/Auricoste) are awarded the contract for deliveries of the Type20 chronographs for the French Armée de l'Air - the Breguet version was manufactured by Mathey Tissot in Switzerland, as you can see below it has no similarities whatsoever to the Breitling (or what now for many is considered the “typical” TypeXX design )

1959: (some claim mass production only started in 1960/61, needs more research) launch of the TypeXX Aeronavale, again manufactured by Mathey Tissot, branded Breguet and, for a small batch, Girard Perregaux

so no, the 765AVI Copilot does NOT “look like a Breguet”, but admittedly Mathey Tissot and/or Breguet were clearly “inspired” by the Breitling design for a model launched 6 or 7 years later

What a beautiful watch, love the bezel, and that clean dial for a 3 ring chrono. Enjoy it.
