Cellini is a Great Underrated Watch!

So, I've been deciding which dress piece to acquire and am trying to understand why the Cellini is so unpopular.
Forgetting the piece's lack of history and "haute horologie" status when compared to similar pieces, the Cellini is a great watch for what it is!
For $10k less than a Calatrava, you get a stunning dressy piece with robustness of a Rolex sports piece. For someone who wants a more wearable and easily serviced watch than a Calatrava, this watch can be beat!
Exposed movement does nothing for me. Would rather have the weight and aesthetic consistency of more gold than glass case back.
I know how "legendary" PP is among watch geeks, but what are you really getting for the $24k you spend on a 5196j? A rather generic looking gold dress watch with a tiny dated movement that most people will think is a Timex!
Lange Saxonia is alright, but value retention no better than Cellini and less easily serviceable and robust.
Cellini is THE BEST everyday "dressy" piece! Change my mind...

I’ve owned a Cellini and agree it’s a nice watch but particularly the key ingredient for me is “ haute horologie “.
As you stated Rolex simply isn’t and there are plenty of makers that are available pre owned at that price point, I’d worry less about value retention and more about the quality and finishing of the watch

You can get a platinum cellini for not a great amount. You can pick up used ones for 3k. And let’s be honest for actual time keeping they will likely perform similar.

Great pick up OP. Totally underrated.

True.

And there’s about 20 $3000-$5000 range 18k Swiss dress watches that make a Cellini look overpriced.

Totally agree with you. I picked up a rose gold Cellini dual time that looked brand new for about 60% of retail. At that price, really hard to go wrong.

Well if you have to ask, then nothing will convince you.

All depends on getting the brand you’re willing to pay $$$$$ - Patek is the peak of that pyramid for many. Others might say AL&S. And others say others...

But few would rattle off Cellini at the top of the dress watch list.

So many Rolex lovers eschew the Cellini brand that they will rationalize DJ, DD and OP as dress models.

The Cellini is definitely a watch I would buy because it's so underappreciated by the Rolex fans that you can get a great price. But you can also get a buy a calatrava for huge discount on the seconsdary market. Gold dress watches are just hard to predict what will sell above, at, or below retail.

Easy to miss just how well-made the Cellini is; elegant and yet featuring a scred-down crown, 5atm and a movement which is as tough as a Rolex sports model. And solid gold. Under-appreciated on the forum.

It's vastly under appreciated here. Take a look at the daily incomings. On a typical day, how many are Cellinis?

Hint: Close your eyes. Now what do you see?

Just tried on a rose gold Cellini time at an AD. That 39mm case has real heft and presence without being overwhelming.
What an exquisite piece! Would have to pick up a pair of 18k rose gold cufflinks to match!

Agreed. If they want to sell me a like new one at 50%-60%, I may be intrigued enough to buy. Maybe.
