US AD asking you to purchase something else?

Has an AD ever asked you to purchase something else to get the watch you want? What was it and did you move forward? My AD also sells jewelry and I have a feeling he would like me to get something from the jewelry side. (this is in the US)

This is pretty common practice among ADs. They want you to "bundle" the watch with other harder to sell and often higher margin items, such as jewelry.

Walked into the shop and bought my DSSD last September without buying any other jewellery from the AD.
Dealer was great, never suggested I had to buy anything else to get at SS.

If the AD doesn't specify the specific item to bundle with and expect me to read his mind, how should I proceed? Is there a like a percentage of the watch price that I should spend?

I would suggest you try to be as candid as possible. Tell them what you are looking for and what they think is the best way to make it happen.

I think they call that "building a relationship"

You can walk in and buy a DJ all day. Go ask for a sports model and be told they dont have any, but buy this first.. etc

In general you'll need to purchase pieces whose trade in value below MSRP sums to an amount equal to the grey premium on the piece you really want.

I’ve been visiting a new (to me) AD that is closer to home and they like to show me DJs.

I like being shown DJs not so much

I’ve never purchased anything from them.

Today you present your interest in a certain reference. They will tell you they haven't seen one and will take a long time to get. They will often take your name and contact info. Then they call and offer you other watches that you are not interested in. If you buy then then you start moving up the ladder, but if you decline they will just stop calling you. Too many other suckers willing to buy what they don't want. Look at the secondary market inventory for any Reference and you will see those are all new watches someone didn't want, they bought and sold to a secondary dealer.

US AD asking you to purchase something else?

My AD has not required me to buy anything else. I make a request. They tell me I am going to have to wait. I wait. Eventually I get a call.

I am buying an EZLink for my OP36 from mine. We haven't met in person yet, but we've been emailing and talking by phone since the release of the new sub last fall. He's got an EZLink for me and I just need to get over there to pick it up and have it installed. It will be a good opportunity to introduce myself and build rapport.

Nope, but two weeks after my AD called me with the news that the no date Sub I wanted was in (three weeks after told him I was interested) I went in and purchased some fairly expensive earrings for my wife's birthday..... I guess I'm doing it backwards.

I've had a good relationship with my AD from day one and never was asked nor would I ever buy anything except for what I want. I did buy one Seiko Tuna with my wife as she wanted (as she put it) 'A Big Fun Watch'. Anyway I got 5 new and 1 used Rolex from him and turned some offers down as well. No bundles, No gateway purchases. He knows I like and buy other brands as well as we always talk watches, him being a WIS as well.

I had that same feeling from my SA in an email yesterday. I was checking in regarding my 116508 green dial Daytona I’ve been waiting for since 2109 and she promised she’s keeping her eyes open for the watch and no she hasn’t forgotten about me. She went on to suggest I pick something else out for my wife for Valentine’s Day. My wife would kill me if in addition to this watch, I bought her more jewelry she doesn’t need or want So I’m hoping she was just being proactive about her job in a jewelry store! This was the first time this has happened to me..

Hahahah welcome to Rolex world. My AD tries to sell me everything that doesn't move in the store with hopes and promises of getting me something good in return. Last time I was there, and I am not joking, he tried to push Datejusts 31mm to me!!! He was like, present it to your girlfriend she would love it. Obviously I didn't buy it, but I have to give him a credit, he was really trying.

You know what, the dealer is reliable but I refuse to buy something I dont like or wont wear. BUT having said that, my really good friend buys everything from him (we use same AD), even the stuff that he doesn't need or want. He is very well off and he can afford that. He build so much history and purchases with our AD in the past 4 years, whenever AD gets Hulk, Daytona, Batman, new Kremit, etc he is the first one that they call. He has all those hard to get watches including Daytona in black and white dial. And the useless stuff that he doesn't want he sells off on eBay or Chrono24. Yes he looses a bit of money on them, but the good pieces that he got thansk to his spending history from AD covered the lost money 10 times over. Something to think about.

Can you disclose the ratio you spent (I.e. if the watch was 20k, did you have to spend 50% of that, 100%, or 200%). Thanks

This is the Rolex flow chart..

Purchase history (non Rolex) = relationship = ability to buy professional Rolexes
