All this Talk about Discontinuation......

..........how come no one has suggested that the YM2 stainless steel, OR, the entire YM2 line for that matter, would be discontinued FIRST before any of the other models which actually have interest and actually sell?

Simply put, it’s not an extremely popular reference. It’s one of the few non-hyped non-ladies watches in the current Rolex catalogue. I don’t believe as many people care to be honest.

It's an extremely large watch and for that reason, I'm out.

It’s the best movement Rolex makes. A in-house caliber 4161
count down fly forward/backward programmable chronograph is a masterpiece of design and engineering.
It’s a model targeted to enthusiast and it’s high price puts it at the top of the SS Professional line which is why the average Rolex buyer knows little to nothing about it. I have owned about every Rolex model over the last 30 years and the YMII is my favorite. It’s a significantly advanced Rolex designed to show case Rolex abilities and way ahead of its time.

Some watches are real life favorites, some are forum favorites, some are both and some are neither. YM2 is neither. That said, I love it and think it’s awesome. And I don’t own one.

I live on a peninsula in southern california within a mile of three yacht clubs.
YM2 is a big thing around here.

Well, I figured if it's not popular, it would be discontinued. Based on some of the responses I've received here, I'm putting my money on the YM2 being discontinued in 2021.

And you're gonna see the prices for these go up as well as demand because there's not many of them out there.

YMII, DJII, and Sky-Dweller do nothing for me. All are big, awkward, and ill proportioned.

there aren't really that many people that can pull off the ym2 since it's big though so it's hard to tell if demand would fly up and at those prices the people that can are buying APs

It actually wears like a big 42mm Daytona as it’s case and lugs are not a blocky super case. The case is also surprisingly thin and it’s case back is wider distributing its weight better than a SD43. It significantly wears smaller than the DSSD.

yeah not surprised it wears smaller than a dssd, dssd is huge lol. also edited my post to include the price aspect...i think the people that are ok with paying 19k for a steel watch (with no hype) would rather go towards AP, but i could be wrong. i actually think the ym2 is a nice looking watch and looks great on people that can pull it off well

While I’m not a huge fan of it aesthetics, based on when it was released, I would not be surprised if they made an update. But it would probably just be an Oyster Flex. Very niche watch, but technically impressive nonetheless.

Technically relevant for sure, up there with the sky dweller.
It’s just big and doesn’t apply well for daily use. Most don’t own a yacht.

Size never stopped those people from buying a DSSD or the JC DSSD.

I have both JC and the YM2 SS and the YM2 wears way more comfortably than the top heavy JC.

I think the biggest thing holding the YM2 back in popularity is the price MORE SO than the aesthetic's of the model.

i agree, i think it's mostly the price. but also the dssd isn't that popular of a watch either

My guess is Rolex won’t discontinue the YMII since it’s 10th anniversary update was in 2017 with the new dial and hands. There is nothing to improve with the cal. 4161 as it has been shown to be very reliable and durable since it was updated from the original 4060 years ago.
The YMII is a very low volume production model so Rolex doesn’t need to push or manufacture it like other models leaving it in a unique position as no other model in the catalog competes with it. It really just has to showcase Rolex technical movement abilities.

I personally have been wanting one for years and didn’t want to chance it’s already expensive $18,750 msrp going any higher if Rolex did discontinue it.
I have been around Rolex long enough to remember the Daytona not being a popular model and then decades later buying a LVC before anyone wanted a green Sub.

I find I use the 10 minute countdown timer for 95% of anything I typically time with a chronograph but it is so easy to read and the flyback or fly forward feature is just outstanding. Button push oozes quality like no other chronograph I have felt and it doesn’t need screw down pushers so it’s always ready to push. I am a movement nerd so it checks all the boxes.

From my review take away about the movement:
A in-house caliber 4161
count down fly forward/backward programmable chronograph is a masterpiece of design and engineering.
. This was and is a big friggen accomplishment. More so it’s in a watch that has a proprietary “command ring bezel” attached directly to the movement but still yields a water resistance of 100 m! That makes this a watch that can be used for water sports from lite diving to snorkeling and general swimming pool activities. There is the Rolex toughness durability even in one of their opus level complex movements. You don’t have to be a watch nerd to understand how significant this is. Making a timing bezel that attaches to the case?... impressive but generally done well by others. Making a bezel that is attached directly to the movement and used to program a mechanical chronograph???????......Bravo Rolex.

If they discontinued the YM2 then what sports models would an AD have in the case?

My nearby AD always has a couple of them and some YM’s in the case.

I don’t think it’s going to be discontinued.

I don't own one, but I like the YM2 in YG. It's unique. I'm not sure I could pull it off, but I always notice it when I see it.

I myself am aspiring to own a YMII! It's the most unique complication I've seen out there among regatta chronos. As previously mentioned these are quite popular among yacht club members.

A 44mm watch with no date.

But I love the red, white and blue colors. I wish my wrist could pull off a 44mm white dial!

I was once seriously considering the YMII. I like the aesthetics, even the text on the bezel. I just couldn’t overcome the fact that it essentially has a complication that has no use in my life. My YM and sub are 6 times more useful.
