Overheard at AD

Visited an AD with significant Long Island square footage today. Of course, not a single Rolex sports piece to be seen.

Anyway, guy comes in, sporting a DJ41 fluted bezel explaining to the SA that he desires a DD40 green dial.

She’s not experienced at the Rolex counter and approaches the Manager halfway across the large showroom floor.

SA: “He’s spent about $50k, wants the green dial DD what do I tell him?”

Manger: “Oh that’s an allocation piece now, we have three others waiting for it, I can’t even take a deposit but he’s a good customer sooo.....”

SA: “so I should just tell him no right?”

Manager: “no just tell him we have his information and we’ll keep him in mind and try to push him towards something else”

Just sharing, it’s fun to hear these guys interact with each other.

No surprise there. At least my AD is honest with me, no lists no nothing if it comes in maybe we will call, but please check back with us periodically.

However with a rose gold piece I recently inquired about, he flat out told me he will order it with Rolex and it should be here in 6 months or so. Not the answer I wanted, but at least it was straight and to the point.

I know that AD, I was in there about a year ago and when I got home had to take a shower to get the slime off.

Thanks for sharing. Not surprising whatsoever, but there's definitely something off-putting every time I hear/read a backend conversation like that. As if we are all pieces of meat to them and nothing more.

Overheard at AD

My AD told me DD are still available for special order and that was two weeks back.

Great AD, great sales people doing their job.

If what the customer has isn’t available, try to sell them something else. Only bad sales people don’t try to do this.

Most likely doesn’t apply to the green anniversary dial.

I know this must be London Jewelers in Americana. I recently had a very poor experience there. I won’t tell the full story, but it ended with the SA complaining to her boss or co-worker (audibly enough for myself and several other customers to hear) that they should “just put up a sign that says they don’t have any steel sports models in stock.”

More AD shenanigans, hate to see it. Try and find an honest AD OP, I know how hard it is and some may say they don’t exist but there are still a few good ones out there!

Completely unprofessional and this lady is clearly not cut out for sales. She should resign or they should fire her.

Doesn't come across as a natural conversation at all. Did this really happen? In front of customers?

For context, a colleague I know purchased the DD40 green dial at his second visit (ever) to the local AD, with zero prior history. Don't believe the hype - walk into your AD, have an adult conversation, and who knows your phone might ring after a few days.

Contrary to several posts in this topic, it is not always about how much you have spent - at all. You do not have to spend $50,000 in order to be rejected for a DD40 green dial, and I find it interesting how disconnected these views are from the reality I, and various others I know have experienced.

Everything is pretty much an allocation piece now.

The supply is low for all Rolex and its not getting better. Even inventory at the grays have reduced significantly.

Buying another watch brand and experience and enjoy it, solves this crazyness.

I don't get that at all. They have one watch and 5 people who want it. One guy spends $150k every year, other guy $50k lifetime. Who should a smart business prioritize?

And of course they will try to sell anyone else a watch that they can actually get...how is that evil?

Typical salespersons. Not sure why anyone expects anything different from a jewelry store simply because they are authorized to sell Rolex watches. It’s a business.

Large square footage made me of think of either London Jewelers or Tourneau in Roosevelt Field (I recognize the former is larger).

That is annoying. At the same time, i don't blame them for wanting to put up a sign. They must endlessly deal with requests for under-supplied models.

I will say, like HJZS2K, I have only had a great experience with London Jewelers. Their AP boutique got me, a person with no purchase history with AP or London Jewelers, my Royal Oak 15500 in just five months.

I wonder if you'd still feel this way if you got 25 phone calls a day and 30 walk-ins asking about a watch that you can't get? After a couple of years, it might get old.

Such is the watch game right now. It will change though, I just hope for the better and not worse.
