Playing the Rolex game!

Hi guys, just need your opinion on this subject.

My AD has offered me a Rolex DateJust 41 (Blue stick dial, fluted bezel, jubilee bracelet). Great watch, don’t get me wrong. But not the sports model I was looking for.

My questions are: should I take it to continue to build my relationship with the AD, is this watching getting harder to obtain, can I afford to say no?

Just like to know what you guys think/would do.

Thanks for your time.

I wouldn't buy a watch I don't want. And I sure as hell am not going to kiss my AD's ass in order to obtain some arbitrary right to spend my hard-earned cash there. This whole "Rolex game" is like some sick, twisted domination/subjugation fetish of the luxury world. Fifty Shades of Rolex, huh?

If you worry about your allocation, you could just buy it and flip it right away. But I'd probably just annoy the shit out of the AD and eventually they will give you a watch just to get rid of you.

If you like it buy it. But don’t buy it to put yourself on an imaginary list. The people on the list have a way bigger purchase history. Just tell your AD that you’re happy they thought of you, but you have your heart set on ...

Buy it if you like it.

There’s a reason why hundreds of thousands of people play the AD game everyday, and more people clamour to play.

People enjoy it.

Exactly my opinion as well.

Buy what you like, otherwise you are just wasting your money.

the date just you mentioned is already a sought after piece which becomes difficult to get from an AD. it's a good looking watch and I would take it in a heartbeat should my AD offered me one.

That DJ is one of the nicest configs to me. Almost a perfect one watch and pretty hard to get.

If this is the first watch you were offered in todays market, that's a good sign.

But you should never buy something you don't want. If its a black dial sub you are after, even as a new customer, unless you are shopping in a big city, that should turn up in 4 - 8 months.

If that is the case, politely thank them for the offer of this watch, explain you are very serious about "your watch" and would like to hang on for it. Of course if this is a steel daytona or blue dial sky dweller its probably not going to happen.

Buy the watch you want not what they want to sell you, if the DJ appeals and you know that you will wear it then why not pick it up, it is a stunning watch. If not tell them politely that you will wait and buy the watch you want when it becomes available.

In the current market climate, it's all about compromise, give-and-take. Like it or not, it is what it is, sadly.

Why would anyone with any own brain power common sense buy anything they dont really want.Afraid today most of this so called AD relationship stuff only exists in internet fantasyland.

I turned down a batman and a hulk waiting on a daytona. I now have the daytona. Nuff said.

Totally agree.

What a time for AD's to be alive! Getting people to drop thousands (sometimes tens of thousands) on stuff they don't even want, in the extremely vague hope that one day they'll be allowed to spend thousands more on something they actually do want.

Why cater to their artificial shortage and then buy stuff from the bottom of the barrel that they produce in big enough numbers to sell them to suckers and people in “emerging economies” that like ugly bling?
Frankly, I see almost nothing in the current line-up that I would buy, period. The “sports models” are all too big and clunky looking now. The grandpa watches are out of the question. Would leave me with a 39mm Explorer or the Milgauss. Otherwise, if interested in subs or sea dwellers, now may be the time to suck it up and buy a classic model on the used market even if they are already more than (non available) new watches.

You could probably sell it and make a few bucks off of it. The fluted/jubilee blue stick is one of the most popular DJ41 models and now allocated. It's a great looking watch, you may wind up loving it and keeping it.

In general I say never buy something you don't want, but I would suggest at least taking a look at it. It's a stunning watch.

I was offered the same from one AD and I declined.
I was kicking myself for not going to at least see it in person but I knew I am not a fan of blue dials so it was ok.
A month later I walked in to another AD and they had a black DJ smooth bezel and oyster bracelet that I loved instantly and purchased.
No regrets on my part and I still am going to get a sub or a gmt master 2 to complement it.
Anyhow my point is go and take a look and see how it makes you feel. Try it on, etc... not sure if I helped in any way

To the OP:
6 questions -
What is your budget?
Do you really think the AD needs your business?
Do you currently own even a single Rolex?
If not, what’s wrong w/starting out with a very desirable blue dial DJ?
What makes you think that your waiting 5-10 years for your desired sports model isn’t ok?
Lastly, If you want your un-named sports model so bad, why not effect a trade for pre-owned model or pay the premium and buy from a grey market dealer???

Sorry Padi I disagree.

Had just spoken to my UK AD and they actually used the "relationship" and "spend history" in their words to me - not prompted.
I was left unimpressed and confused with converstation, as I was told the watch model I wanted could be "allocated" to me??? still none the wiser???
Does anyone know what "allocated" means in WOS (not WIS)terminology??
Look, the OP, I think could buy watch if you want it, but be sure you might loose some money later in trade if it is not the watch you want to keep. You would also have to run the gauntlet of second hand watch trading safely.
If on the other hand you would keep and enjoy the DJ (in the meantime etc.,) then you could play the AD game.

Good Luck either way!

The margin of gain/ loss on buying this piece these days is nominal. I'd view it as a risk free trial of a piece you didn't have top of mind + building spend history with the AD too.

If you wear it and don't like it you should be able to get most of your money back no problem (or maybe even make a little). Just be careful with it and don't scratch it up until you've made up your mind :-)

Only buy the watch you really want anything else will lead to frustration and disappointment.
It's a major purchase and should be your friend for a very long time.

If you want it, buy it. If you don't want it, don't buy it.

There is no game. It's just a business trying to get money from you. It's what businesses do.
