I'm not too experienced with the Red Subs either but the one thing that sticks out to me is the font on the date wheel. The 6 isn't fully closed...which is fairly common on the fakes. However, this being a vintage sub might mean that the font was different back then?

Open 6 and 9 are pretty standard on the older subs :-) I can't remember the time these were phased out, It'll come back to me soon :-)

Had a good look at one just last Saturday. The dealer wanted $10K.

Yours looks very much like what I saw.

If you can get your hands on the book on vintage sport Rolexes, there are some very good comparative photos of the Red Sub.

Yeah, I'm no expert on vintage watches, but I have spent my time looking at the Red Subs. This one looks fairly legit to me. There are no tells that I can see based on these pictures that suggest it was a redial, or someone painted over with Red as in the case of some of the watches. Unfortunately I don't see a really good close-up that would give me a definitive say on the authenticity of the watch being a Red Sub, but it does looks okay.

i have taken the watch to A.D. (rolex), the watch checks out. BUT i am not trying to buy the watch, i am trying to buy a dial on a 1680 watch. i've asked many people for suggestion/ direct and advise. my problem is the 6's example i found a open, semi-closed but not closed. in our(TRF) library i see a picture of tha bottom half of a dial with out the cornet. the next place i see a example is of a mbw at replica watch report. so this is why i posted for help and direction. the knowlegde of one isn't as great as many.

the RED Sub Dial...looks like having fully closed "66" font in...
"660ft = 200m" depth rating...

Some collectors called this the Final version of RED Submariner...
which would be correct for the serial nos. mentioned by Buddy Blaine...
i.e. 3.81mil series...

Orchi and all members: if you were in my shoes, a.d. okayed it, seller is what a know, no issues. no box or papers, seller claim's he bought it 1998, 1999 "late 90's". and finally with the pictures you see (brand new camera i'm learning) thumb-up or thumb-down

Err buddies...buying the Ref 1680 RED Submariner would mean...
having the need to pay heftier prices...even at the currect weaker
resale market for such a watch...n exposing oneself to bigger
risks...at difficult positions more often than not...
because it is one of the most FAKED Rolex Vintage watches...

IF it is something that one wants...by hook or by crook so to speak...
PLEASE DO plenty of homework studying & identifying the RED Sub Dial variants...
before making the calculated & diligent decision...to buy it.

there is only so much one can find on the net without having one a compare against. after discovery 4 different types of red subs i had no idea it is that tough. at a mid 5 price, i don't want to pay 1,5-2,0g more then a should for a white 1680.
