Do you use a watch winder?

I just picked up a Yacht-Master 116622 and was talking to the AD about winding settings (directions and number of turns) and he suggested not even using one. I was curious what everyone else does. If you’re not wearing a watch for a while do you let it run out or manually wind or use a winder? He compared it to running a car 24/7 in that it will probably need servicing faster and it’s ok to let it run out and then just wind as needed.

I don't have one but a friend who has dozens of rolexes told me he'd give me his for free if i wanted to since he didn't use them anymore. He said it'd wear out the machine much faster.

I use them and have had zero issues. I suspect the responses here will be split about 50/50.

I asked the same question on another thread few days ago since I had the same concerns. My wife surprised me with a Wolf winder as a early birthday present. I have no choice but to use it now.

Yes to watch winder. I alternate my GMTs between airline trips so like to keep them at the ready at a moment's notice.

I don’t have one but more and more think I need one in the near future. I’d like to set minute hand exactly points to the marker when the second hand passes 12 (call me crazy). It takes time to set my watches so a winder will help keep them that way when I rotate throughout the week.

I don’t. I find it more fun to wind and set them up each time, as long as they are not PQ.

There’s been a couple of discussions on this subject in the past week or so. It’s a way for a newbie to start a thread. This forum offer a real depth of experience and quality information, along with a lots of opinions, if one takes some time to research what’s been said.

Winder? No need. Wear and enjoy. If you have enough timepieces that one winds down, find pleasure in winding, setting and admiring your good fortune.

I'd never buy a watch winder because my apartment (particularly the kitchen) is cluttered with all sorts of gadgets/devices that seemed a good idea at the time! Just let your watch run down if you're not using it for a while. This will NOT harm any Rolex. Then just wind it, set the time and off you go! Enjoy your Yacht-Master...

I use mine as an attractive display case. Never plugged it in but it looks good, and can be used if needed. I chose Wolf with leather case and nice looking wood veneer.

Would come in super handy for a perpetual calendar or some other grand complication that takes forever to set. My most advanced is the sky dweller and that only takes a minute to adjust

As others have said, I use a winder on watches with significant complications. Just let the others run down and wind prior to wearing. I know of many cases where watches have been used on winders for many years with no problems. I believe with routine service intervals it makes no difference whether the watch is on a winder or not. The analogy with an automotive engine running is a poor one since the much higher loads in an engine and the presence of corrosion products create a much tougher situation.

I'd probably use one, if I didn't enjoy setting my watches. But I do, so I don't.

Hundreds of threads here on this topic, and the same answers every time.
Some like them, some don’t.
Half the enjoyment is winding and setting IMO, and unless you are wearing a multi complication watch, it’s hardly a chore.
If you’re trying to save time, to ‘grab and go’, then maybe it’s time to slow down in life a little.
Personally, I d just put the money towards another watch.

To me, the biggest negative of the winder is that the watch(es) will be on display for anyone when u r not home. (Unless u keep the winder in the safe)

I will only use Swiss Kubik which has a long battery life and can be put in the safe. Setting an annual calendar is too tedious.

I use them. Sometimes I remember to switch them on, sometimes I don't. If a watch is properly wound, not overwound, and wears out more quickly if it runs continuously, I would suspect the quality of the movement.

Since the majority of my watches have GMT functions, all have date functions and two have annual calendars, and I wear them all in rotation, I find it useful to have them running, when I remember to.

Not necessary, but can be convenient for more complicated watches. I personally don’t use one, although I do own one (received as a thoughtful gift from a loved one).

I literally searched for watch winder before starting thread and nothing came up. Not saying there aren’t threads but the search function here isn’t exactly google quality.

Have had several. Swiss Kubik is by far the best. Can set from a phone app for different watch cycles.

Search function works well, but does depend on the internet browser being used. Seems safari and Firefox tend to hinder the results returned for whatever reason..

I have a couple Orbita's and use them about half the time when home. When I leave on two month trips I let them run dead. I personally just like the convenience of a grab and go when I am home.

That’s completely normal to set the watches that way.
