Been there done that, time to land a man on Mars. I don't get why we would want to spend this kind of money to land on a rock we've already been to many times.

You can get to the Moon in 3 days. It takes bout 7 MONTHS to get to Mars. 7 months of being cooped up in a small capsule with 3 other men - staring at each other, trying to be productive while not killing each other. It is a HUGELY difficult endeavor. We need to learn how to build and live on the Moon, not just visit for a couple of days, before heading off to Mars.

This, wtf are you gonna do for 7-9 months? And that’s to get there when initially there is nothing there. Coming back to Earth will take another 7-9 months and that’s only after someone can come and pick you up. Difficult, fuel sources?

I like the idea of watch live transmission and feel the thrill on landing.
Also to get a special edition on this take |

"We choose to go to Mars...We choose to go to Mars in this decade and do the other things, not because they are easy, but because they are hard; because that goal will serve to organize and measure the best of our energies and skills, because that challenge is one that we are willing to accept, one we are unwilling to postpone, and one we intend to win, and the others, too." Imagine how incredible it will be when (hopefully in my lifetime) we get to see a human being walking the surface of another PLANET! It is certainly doable and only takes the will and of course funding to make it happen. If we really wanted to put a man on Mars by the end of this decade it could happen. People thought it was just about impossible to land on the moon as quickly as the Americans did it. With the computing power and technology we have now it can certainly be done. Yes it's a long ride, yes there are only short windows to leave and return, and just like the moon I guess you could argue "What's the point?" but this all sounds so familiar to the arguments against the moon landing. Let's put the resources into a manned Mars landing not because it is easy, but because it is hard! |

Remember - NASA spent 10 Apollo missions working/learning their way to the moon.

Until there's a substantial breakthrough in propulsion for human payload & provisions, mission time remains a significant hurdle. If we can step off from the Moon, it might be easier.

I'd say Apollo 1 wasn't a mission ( plugs out test, pure O2 environment - and horrific fire killing White, Chaffee, Grissom) so I'd include it in your list of learning their way to the moon, so total of 11. Picking nits here, I know.

Because in order for manned travel to Mars you need the moon as a station and jumping off point. It’s that simple.

In addition, all 12 Gemini missions were also steps towards getting on the moon.

Yes probably Mars is the final goal, the interview with E.M says about these plans for sending humans to Mars and have a sustainable base over there
https://youtu.be/BN88HPUm6j0 E.M : “Going to Mars reads like that advert for Shackleton going to the Antarctic. You know it is dangerous. It's uncomfortable, and it's a long journey." "You might not come back alive, but it is a glorious adventure and it will be an amazing experience ... Yeah, honestly, a bunch of people will probably die in the beginning." "Humanity is the agent of life and we have an obligation to ensure the creatures of Earth continue even if there is a calamity on Earth, whether it is man-made or a natural calamity - if you look at the fossil record there are many mass extinctions. It is about ensuring we pass that threshold where it is self-sustaining if some calamity prevents the ships from going there." |
