Matte Dial on 214270 vs 124270

Hi everyone, first question I have is on the 214270 is the dial matte from certain angles?

I looked at one in the sub today and could only get the matte effect from certain angles. Is that normal or a flaw in a particular production run of this watch. The one I took photos of is a 2020 or 2019.

Lastly, the old specs for the 214270 described the dial as lacquered if memory serves. If so, does that mean the new 36mm will have the same kind of matte “from certain angles” type of dial?

Thanks for the help. Now let’s hope I can upload these photos with ease.

I would describe the dial on the 214270 as "satin" not truly matte. It is more reflective than the flat black "construction paper-like" matte dials found on a Panerai or a vintage Rolex for example. It is still fantastic and has a great sparkle with depth. The new 36mm will have a plain gloss black dial like a Sub or GMT if I am understanding correctly. Other than the size, it is the main thing I dislike about the new version. Matte or Satin dials make the SD and Explorer unique.

If you look straight on it looks like it has gloss, but I have to angle the photos in a way to get the matte look. Is something wrong with this watch or am I crazy?

214270 dial is definitely a matte black compared to the standard gloss black dials founds on the subs/gmts. i believe the new explorer will more closely resemble the subs and gmts in having a gloss black dial.

It's matte ... *not* the same as subs and gmts!

So is it supposed to look matte from all angles?

You're probably confusing the shiny crystal with the dial. The dial itself is matte but the crystal on top is glossy just like any other crystal so it may sometimes blend in with the dial

But I’ve seen the dial out of the case and it’s got a slight gloss to it. Is it supposed to be like that?

It’s supposed to be as shown in the pics above. Matte finish but looks glossy due to the Crystal.

The flat/matte finish of the 214270 was the one feature I wish they kept for the new 36mm models. It made the explorer 1 and the black dial explorer II just a little different than all the other sport models with gloss finish.

Like others have said, 214270 has a matte dial. However, it is only noticeable under sunlight. Most of the time, it looks exactly the same as Sub, GMT, etc.

I love the matte dial.

Your watch is perfectly fine, Rolex's new play on matte dials is another wonerdwully executed dial. I believe in modern literature they call the dial satin finish. While the dial can look glossy indoors or in normal lighting situations, in direct sunlight or bright lighting the satin "matte" finish will present. The lack of AR coating on the crystal also helps it to appear glossy at times, but like I said, it's another genius Rolex dial. Like the Sub LV, it's bright green dial can look completely black in certain angles.
Enjoy your watch, it's just fine.

Highly doubt that. Rolex seems adamant about maintaining the basic aspects of both Explorers. The dial finish will remain the same. So far we've only seen indoor normal lighting photos but once it starts getting into hands and we'll start seeing the matte-ness in the sun. Same as previous models.
