Gunked up nasty 66' Gilt GMT with aftermarket insert brought back to life

Great looking watch, imo.

Beautiful example. I think I’d take it even with the aftermarket insert...

Looks great Phillip! You can definitely clone the original owner from all that gunk under the bezel.

That is great work - a new lease on life and now more legit with that overhaul.

Any idea what the owner will be doing with it?

Phillip - don't you just hate opening a case and discovering bunged-up screw heads?

Do you replace them or leave them? . . . .

This is awesome. Every time I see a watch restored and brought back to life, it reminds us that these are not disposable and there is something special about a watch with that kind of history, not just an investment to be flipped or kept in the safe.

Haha, if that were the case, I would be replacing every screw on every vintage movement I service...I just replace them if requested by the owner as they are no longer being sold by Rolex.

Wow. So satisfying to see that transformation. Thanks for sharing.

Was that corrosion as well as gunk under the bezel? It looks like it in one before photo.

I thought there was some corrosion, but it ended up being all gunk.

The dial was in such a good condition even before the restoration.
What a great piece!

I thought it was going to be pretty bad, but one of the nicest, unmolested dials I have seen.

Nothing beats a professionally restored gilt dial watch. Great job Phillip! Still staring constantly at my 5513 you did for me. It’s amazing how beautiful these 50+ year old watches can turn out to be in the right hands.
