Looks like a proper back street polishing job.

This.

Literally the only person I'd trust to do any work on any high end piece outside of the factory would be Jonathan Shemtov out of OvertimeNYC, his attention to detail is phenomenal.

I don’t know anything about polishing technique when it comes to APs. What makes you guys say this is “proper back street polishing job”. Was it his technique or certain equipment that he used?

Apparently AP has specialized tools that ensure the case doesn't loose the sharp/crisp lines that make it so sexy.

When true artisans use their tools they have a clear level of skill and refinement in their technique that is plain to see. Everyone knows that a poorly polished AP will look rounded off so when you see a guy randomly pushing a watch strap into a polishing wheel without any apparent technique I’m just glad it isn’t my watch he’s working on.

Ah, I see. I thought it was kinda weird when he was somewhat jamming the case against the polishing wheel. Thanks.

Also, I’m pretty sure at around 1:32 there’s a dead mosquito by the dismantled watch which you wouldn’t find in the AP factory - certainly not on a promotional video.

If you look at the watch after, it has lost almost sharp edges…

Nothing worse than an over-polished RO bezel. Too easy to ruin the crisp transition from the brushed top to the polished sides. The folks on Youtube seem to like it, though.

I’m very curious on the cost savings if anyone here has looked into having a piece polished by the factory vs a trustworthy recommendation like OvertimeNYC mentioned above. No disrespect to anyone out there that does fantastic work (I’m sure there are some) I just don’t get saving a few dollars unless you are a grey dealer prepping for a flip.

It depends on a variety of factors. If you're talking about a piece that's still within the warranty timeframe then I'd be going with AP, if it's outside of that timeframe then Jonathan makes sense for maintenance or refreshing the piece. In terms of cost, Jonathan will be probably 20%-35% cheaper than AP and will be turning a piece around in two weeks opposed to six to eight weeks. I've seen some of his transformations, and they're quite impressive to say the least. There have been some pieces that looked unrecoverable, and once he was done they looked almost new.

The thing about it is this: the outcome, or more precisely the potential outcomes. Once one saves a few coins, but then is unhappy with rounded-off edges, the remedy becomes tantamount.

The factory has more options for the dissatisfied - and a means to set it straight. The remedy at an indie is pretty much limited to a refund.

If I ever score one of these I'd rather live with the scratches and enjoy it in the raw. I can't imagine preferring the removal of watch down to the level of the scratch.

100% agree, that poor 15202…

One should expect the following tooling at least. And then as you also mentioned above, proper craftsmanship.

Great pics

So a flat disc with an inclinometer to guarantee the bevel angle ? Nah, I prefer the guy to attack the rouge soaked disc in a slapping motion.

In the comments of the video he says that the 15202 already suffered a previous poor polish job so this was an improvement. So, two poor non-factory polishing jobs. Ouch.

Lol, think that was just watch link grime. Either way, think it came out of the watch.

That was a bit painful to watch. Why didn't the guy wear finger gloves when re-assembling the watch?
