15202 or platinum daytona?

Thought this would make for an interesting thread topic. With the rise of the 15202 pretty much over the retail value of a platinum daytona (still possible to get). How many of you would sell your 15202 to get one?

If not....is there any watch you would sell your 15202 to get?

I'll go first. I'd probably only sell my 15202 for a 15407. I'd be tempted on the daytona platinum though.

No - my 15202 is beautiful and very comfortable. Not a fan of Platinum - too heavy, scratches easily and I don't like the color. If I could get the 15202 in Ceramic, yes.

I don't have a 15202, but if I did, I would sell it for a 15407 in a heartbeat (not that it would be enough to cover "market price"), but not for a Platona. I didn't get the appeal of having a platinum anchor on my wrist when I tried one (and they were going at significant discounts from ADs).

I would sell mine only to get 5711 or 6263 Daytona.

Great question!

If had one - which I don't. I wouldn't sell it (I have watches that followed a similar fate to 15202 and kept them).

However I wouldn't buy one at current market price and would go for sthg else, typically the Platona. 15202 is great but nowhere near $100k of value, you can have much more watch for that price tag imho.

Huge fan of Platinum. Love the feel, the warmth, the weight.

Platona over a SS Jumbo for me.

Now, if it's a Platinum Jumbo, that's a different story.

Well...the inner trader in me would go 15202 --> Platona (at retail I'm assuming for your question) --> diamond dial swap --> 26574 in Platinum with a bit of cash on top...

But that' s a bit cheating. To answer more directly, I probably wouldn't sell a 15202 for a Platona, but if I had to pay gray market for 15202 or pay list for Platona, then I would rather pay list for Platona.

Have quite the proclivity for the AP Jumbo, it aesthetically is perfect to me. I wouldn't trade any of my jumbos for any daytona (i've owned most iterations) and my RG Jumbo I think will be a forever piece. The daytona and jumbo are apples and oranges. I will sell one of them and add cash for a 5740 which is the only rival to the jumbo IMO which are two completely different watches so a bit of an unfair comparison.

15202 or platinum daytona?

I definitely wouldn’t swap my 15202 for any Daytona, period. I have recently been lucky enough to add a 15202 from my friends at AP House, it’s the watch that started me in this watch hobby as my best friends dad had a jumbo in the late 1980’s and even as a teenager I loved the design and knew it was a special watch but I never expected to own one.

I do like the weight of platinum, I especially like the fact that most people think it’s steel unless they’re into watches. A platinum jumbo with a blue tapisserie dial would probably be close to perfection for me although I wouldn’t be able to afford it.

The platona is a very nice watch and it’s the only Daytona I’d buy but for me having the watch that started the luxury sports watch genre makes it an important one for any collection.

I never understand any of these topics on this or the Rolex side of the forum.
You simply cannot compare a mass produced Rolex to an Audemars Piguet in any way, they’re leagues apart.
The relative Rolex comparison in horological terms would be against an Omega

However, Omegas have been to the moon and Rolexes have been to the bottom of the Pacific Ocean. Where's Audemars been? It takes horological brilliance to engineer a watch for extreme conditions. Whether that compares to the effort necessary to do a superb job of polishing and beveling a movement, I don't know. A lot of collectors have spent big bucks on mass produced Rolexes so there might be differing opinions on this subject.

Let me clear up some of the confusion. My point was assume you got the jumbo at retail. That means today you could sell that watch for 100k. That is, a 30k watch is now 100k. So a lot of people here wouldn't pay 100k for the jumbo (me included). But there are people who will. Same with the 5711.

So now that this 30k watch is now trading around 100k, I wanted to see if anyone would trade their jumbo for a watch that is worth more at retail. I picked the platinum daytona because it is still a watch that with some effort could be had at retail. If the 5990, 5990r, 5980r, or even the 5740 could be had at retail still, in 5 seconds I'd sell my jumbo and buy any of those.

So the platinum daytona was the only watch really I could think of that could be had at retail with some effort. Plus now they are selling for 130-140k I believe?

I uh... don't think one can easily pick up a 5740 at retail, if you can, please get me a hook up!

If we take the specific numbers out the equation, the question I ask myself is how much does someone need to pay me to convince me never to wear a certain watch again.

While I don't have a jumbo, I do have a blue ROC. Amazingly, and I say amazingly because having recently confronted a decision where I could cash out $30k to part with a blue ROC, actually I'd still want to wear a blue ROC. On the flip side, if someone gave me $30k to part with a sub, I'd totally ditch the sub.

I know it's a bit of topic but this whole craziness is spoiling the pleasure of the hobby for me. I never bought a watch for profit but now I have less pleasure wearing some of my pieces, typically the hot APs or PPs. I never used to care but now I do and I see myself wearing less for ex. my 5712 as if I were to damage it or else, I know I couldn't easily replace it.

I’d take a nice blue 15300 and some cash at these crazy prices for 15202. Wouldn’t swap AP for Rolex.

I don't see what difference the market price makes when you are concerned about wearing and damaging your 5712. As far as I know the service cost is the same whether the secondary market price is $30K or $100K.
Would you enjoy your home less if the value of it doubled after you bought it? Would it make you happier if the value of your home dropped 30% the day after you purchased it, which was typical for watches?

And you have cleared up the confusion by pointing out that your trade doesn't work since you can't get the Platona at retail, either.
These trade concepts only work if one is willing to sell their Very Hot watch and buy a completely not hot watch. Sell your 15202 to fund a Laurent Ferrier or a Lange 1815 chronograph and it works.
If you compare the retail prices for the 15202 and the Platona with the secondary market price for each, the premium for the Platona is almost the same. Essentially, by selling the 15202 and buying the Platona, you will have gained nothing. And this is why few collectors are willing to sell their 5711s or 15202s et al. For most, their is nothing to gain unless you want to go outside the field and pay for, say, your kids college tuition.

Let me clarify - these pieces remain fragile watches, especially aesthetically, as they scratch easy and unfortunately it's not an easy fix as polishing can maybe done once but that's it...

I like to wear and don't think about what could happen but now I do. Or worse if it gets stolen.

Replacing a 30k available piece is one thing. Replacing a 100k piece is different.

Maybe said differently, I can go to the gym with a 30k watch but wouldn't with a 100k one.

I guess that is just me. I should have bought bitcoins

All can be replaced you just have to pay for it. A new 5712 bezel will cost you about 3-4k CHF if you don’t want to get it polished. You can wear it then eventually request it gets replaced during a service if all scratched and don’t want polished. Same with AP.

If concerned about it, best to get it insured or just wear for special occasions only / stick in safe. That would be a shame though and bit of a waste as not getting much enjoyment out of it.

A client of mine has the original 5711P that fetches stratospheric auction results and he wear it almost daily, it’s actually just been for it’s 1st polish and been returned looking like new. Best just to wear these watches and enjoy them.

Lol. Speak for yourself. Just because YOU cannot get one at retail doesn't mean I cannot. I have a good relationship with an AD who will give me one at retail if I want it.

That makes your hypothetical a bit confusing. As you'd "probably only sell my 15202 for a 15407", why not just do that? Sell 15202 at market and get a 15407 and another 15202 from your AD? That sounds like a plan.

Dude, that would be an epic small business plan. Infinitely flip 15202 -> 15407 -> 15202 -> 15407. How many inventory turns can I get before I work through the entire annual production of jumbos and open works?

Great plan. Don't think my dealer will give me another 15202 though. They already crying trying to get me the 15407.

Word’s of wisdom Ash..

Should be enjoyed for what they are instead of what they are valued at!
