2021 BLRO RSC appointment

Hi everyone,

Just a thread to document my upcoming RSC appointment/experience in Toronto. I will be dropping off my 126710BLRO picked up from my AD in April 2021.

After a few days I noticed that the lume was not properly applied to the GMT hand. It is very noticeable in the dark, but also there is an annoying black spot even under normal lighting. I decided to enjoy it for a bit but now I will be bringing it in to make it right.

I know this might be a small issue for some and not worth removing the crystal for, but it does bug me. Funny enough, when I purchased my sub in 2015 I had to bring it to RSC as well because I had a very low mag cyclops. I made a thread about it and that experience went well (quick one week turnaround). My only 2 Rolex purchase needed to have defects corrected within a month of ownership, luck perhaps?

Anyway, here are the pictures. I’ll update for anyone interested tomorrow after I drop it off.

Another few pictures but not as zoomed. The lack of lume on the gmt hand is more noticeable in person and looks almost like a dark smudge.

I also have two Rolex bought new from AD (coincidentally my second is an April 2021 BLRO!).

My first one was a 216570 polar and had to be sent to RSC brand new because the bezel was set noticeably off center. No issues with the BLRO so far.

It will be worth it to get it fixed if it bothers you.

This is unfortunate. And it would certainly bug me as well. Keep us posted on how it goes. Hopefully the experience will be as painless as the encounter back in 2015.

Should be quick hopefully. Likely just change out the GMT hand

How could it possibly leave the factory like that?

I wonder about Rolex QC, it seems that a company which exalts itself for being the best of the best would not let such a defect leave the factory.

Seriously... Things like that do happen and I'm sure they will get it back to you all fixed up right away. Sometimes a problem makes the watch more valuable in the case of the Cream Dial Explorer II. Good Luck!

Should be just a new GMT hand.

I remember 2015 and all the under-magnifying cyclops.

A faulty gmt hand will never give you a financial advantage though.

It's crazy to think this quality left Switzerland to come in to be sold. And obviously you were charged full price for a less than ideal watch. Hopefully it comes back quick. I need to start checking all of my watches under different conditions just to make sure I don't have these issues.

I don't blame you OP for wanting a fix; obviously a defect and would bug me also.

First would hardly call it a huge defect it just lume paint and when paint dries its possible to shrink a bit. And Rolex dont make the watch hands themselves, a firm called Aiguilles makes all the watch hands for all models.

They have trouble with QC, because as they produce so much, how do you make sure only a few % of the output is defective?

Fun fact: they test the 126660 twice, first without the caliber so they don’t ruin it should the case fail.

Hope your watch makes it back in one piece! My first BLRO came back from RSC with so much damage that my (awesome) AD ended up replacing it with the next new one they received. So -1 RSC, +1 AD

Just based on my own, possibly outdated, anecdotal experience with warranty service at an RSC — I would bet your GMT hand swap will get bumped to the top of the queue, and the turnaround will be quick.

Bad luck OP, shame that with all the hundreds of thousands of watches that Rolex makes each year, and the millions that have been produced in the intervening time between your watches you picked two that had faults.

Update**

I just got back from RSC. They also noticed that the seconds hand was not properly finished either, which they actually pointed out to me. They will be replacing both hands. Unfortunately, they do not have the parts in stock, so they advised that I might be waiting about 1 month to get the watch back.

I will post back with final results or any issues that might pop up until then.

You would think higher quality control for sure. What's interesting to note is I think that the hands on the watches are one of a few (or sole) parts that is still not made by Rolex in-house.

Edit. I see Padi already brought up the hands not being in-house before my post.

The fact they’re not made in house would make you think they’d be more careful with quality.

It’s simply not good enough

I’ll just leave these here

This allows them to sell your used BLRO for $20k I suppose after a bit of repair.

You would think so, but I've noticed over the years that the hands on Rolex are the least consistent in quality. Ever look at an Explorer 2 orange GMT hand under a loupe? Lol don't or you will forever be scarred.

Rolex's finish quality on their hands is quite poor considering the price. Grand Seiko is far superior IMHO. Its a shame.
